Subject: DeLorean Estate (was Errata)

On this topic, I was recently at the DeLorean Estate.  I have spoken to the
caretaker who is overseeing the work there several times.  Recently as Marc
pointed out there was a charity event there this fall and we sent some cars
to display out front of the main house for the event.  They are currently
restoring various parts of the house.  When I was there a few weeks ago I was
invited to go through the house again.  They had just refinished the floors
in a few rooms.  The plan is for it to remain essentially as it is with some
modifications to accomodate it being part of the club house of the new golf
course, Lamington Farms.  They are doing a lot of work but it is still
essentially the same now as it was when John was there minus the furniture of
course.  In fact John's three sheep dogs have remained on the property and
are being cared for.  Part of the agreement.  In any event I have been
talking with the manager of the project.  He is interested in again having a
get together at the Estate this spring.  This time for the members of
DeLorean Mid Atlantic and of course any other DeLorean Owner or Enthusiast
who would like to attend.  I am going to try to set it up over the next few
months.  Hopefully it will work out.  It was in fact their idea.  It will
probably be the last chance for any who have not seen the DeLorean Estate to
see it as now as it was when JZD lived there.  By this summer I am sure they
will be well underway with transforming it in to the new golf course.  Anyone
who is interested in attending the event with their car let me know privately
and I will keep a list.  Makes for a great photo op for your car in front of
the main house.  I have pictures on my web site for those who would like to
see when I was there while JZD was still there.  The link is below.  Click on
the "My meeting with JZD" link.  I will keep you posted.

Try putting it on the top louver.  You should be able to find some
small clips you could put around the lip of the louver, or use some
kind of adheasive.  This way you wouldn't need to drill a hole in it
like you feared with T-panel.  You can then simply run the wire with a
little slack on the side of the louver to allow it to still be raised.

Even with a hands free system, I still dont reccomend driving while
talking on a phone!

My drivers side door sags at about halfway. The strut on the door is less
than 3 months old(from DeloreanOne). I live in Ohio and it is about 40
degress right now. I have heard that the doors can sag in cold weather but I
didn't know how much they should sag. Anyway if I were to adjust the torsion
bar how would I do it?

I don't have nearly the experience of the other listers but I have
some comments myself.

I've been looking for a similar situation. I'd prefer to get a car
thats at least drivable but needs to be saved. I want to keep as many
of these things alive as possiable.

So far it's been easier to find better examples then worse ones. You
can find cars to save but it's going to be hard to find exactly what
your looking for. The other thing is that cars that need saving are
often a worse value then a better car.

If you want to save a car it's going to cost more to save a car then
get one that doesnt need much.

There is something to be said for the stainless steel frame. I would
love to do it myself. The problem is mainly costs. The frame intself
is around $7000+ before any labor or installation parts. That plus an
average car needs saving at your at the lower end of the average
priced DeLorean.

If you decide to go the U-Haul route, do NOT tell them it is for a
DeLorean.  They look at their little book and it says a DeLorean will
not fit on there.  It is a very tight squeeze, but it can be done.  I
believe that the reason was that the U-Haul trailer's maximum width is
70", but the D is 71" wide.  It also mentions in the book that the
U-Haul is too low and the door will swing out and hit the trailer
fenders.  That would be the case if the D door was a 'normal' door
swinging out sideways, but since it opens -up-, it's not a problem.

In general I have found that being as vague as possible at U-Haul always
pays off...

The creator of the SS frame, Bryan Pearce, is still on the list. He
may join in here, but is pretty busy with real life.

To date, there has been exactly one of the frames manufactured, the
one on Bryan's car. He has now driven it as his only car for several
years and tens of thousands of miles.  The car is a year-around daily
driver on the salty winter roads here in Chicago, and the frame looks
exactly as the day it was built. It's not especially pretty, he did
not polish it up to a mirror finish. It just looks like industrial
bare stainless steel. No sign of cracking or deterioration.

As far as restoring a car with a rusted frame, you'll see all kinds,
but in general if the frame has rusted badly enough to warrant
replacement, you'll need many of the parts that are attached to the
frame as well. I've seen a few, and the fuel fittings, brake
fittings, small brackets, and even the trailing arms may be junk. And
you are correct, in most cases any car that sat around long enough to
rust like this was outdoors, and all of the topside stuff (interior,
rubber seals, dash etc) is garbage too.

Nick (NJP548) may want to pipe in her too. He is doing that same job
(to a standard frame) and can vouch for the degree of difficulty (not
too bad) and amount of small-parts changing you'll have to do (lots).

If you are planning on paying someone to do all this ahead of
shipping to the UK, you'd better have a very full checkbook.

This sort of thing is impossible to estimate on a "ferinstance"
basis, it is tremendously variable based on the condition of the car
you start with.

Honestly, if I had my heart set on investing in the SS frame, I'd
probably start with the best car I could and sell off the (good) old
frame to someone else. I would not want to put this kind of
investment in a marginal car. It would probably be cheaper in the
long run and you'd end up with a much nicer car. If this sounds like
the $20K speech+frame, it probably is. But you'd have the closest
thing to a bulletproof lifetime DMC that you could.

Actually it was potential stress cracking with temperatures sub-zero and the
subsequent fear of lawsuits if it failed in the US market that led to the
use of the epoxy coated steel frame.

If your door sags that much chances are a torsion bar adjustment is
required. Try removing the strut after proping open the door, slowly
lower the door and it should remain open 2-5 inches. If it does not DO
NOT attempt to adjust the torsion bar yourself. There are many owners
in Ohio and the surrounding area. You should be able to find someone
with the tools and experience required to help you. You may have to
wait till a club meet but you will not be happy if you attempt to do
it yourself and damage the car and maybe hurt yourself in the process.
 You could try switching the struts from side to side, it is possible
to have a bad strut however unlikely. Look in the old posts there are
many references to the struts, torsion bars, doors, and adjustments.
There is an excellent article on adjusting the torsion bars in an old
Delorean World.

Hey guys,

i would like to get in contact via private email with anyone out there who
has  replaced their entire stereo system in their D - at least all four
speakers and head unit.  i specifically need confirmed mounting depths, rear
speaker size, and what can be done to make it sound GREAT.  i asked about
this briefly a few months ago on the list, but i cannot seem to find the
digest articles in the back issues...  when i am done with my installation i
plan to put up a detailed summary of my experience for others to examine
should they choose to do this also.

i would also like to know if there's anyone out there who has installed 6x9
boxes on the parcel shelf or 8"/10" subs back there.  any comments on the
sound, amount of room it took up, is it worth it?

Here in Connecticut(check the laws of the states you will pass thru)
it is illegal to tow a unregistered motor vehicle unless all wheels
are off the ground (no tow trucks or tow dolleys can be used to tow
unregistered vehicles,(unless it is from a accident and authorized by
a Police officer)which means all wheels must be off the ground, which
means the only way it can be towed is on a car trailer or flatbed,or
enclosed trailer,ALSO BEWARE if anybody has to pass thru the NEW
JERSEY Turnpike,THEY DO NOT ALLOW TOW DOLLEYS on the Jersey Pike,ask
me how I know,One more thing beware of the Uhaul trucks,as the upkeep
isn't the best.

We are planning a Delorean show in Orlando this Saturday.  If anyone in the
area has a Delorean that runs and read your message, then chances are they
will be at the show.  How does Sunday look?  And what time of day?  What
sort of setting/backdrop do you want to use?  After driving the car that
distance, it will probably need washing again.  There is little time to prep
the car before then.  Could you choose another day?

As an after thought, I saw a spicy photo shoot of a model washing a car.
Could you convince your model to wash my car?  LOL. :)

>From experience, I suggest finding a Delorean with gray interior if you are
going to be doing any interior shots including a model.  The black interior
makes for rather contrasty photos and is hard to mix with flesh tones.
(Mine is a black interior.)

Dave is correct on this.  I can honestly say that doing a frame off
restoration is not very hard to do, but it is still a lot of work.  There
were a LOT of parts that I had to replace while I was doing this restoration.
 The good thing after all this is that when I finish with the restoration,
almost everything on my De Lorean will be like brand new.  In May of 2000, I
separated the frame and the body, now 8 months later I am finally able to put
everything back together again.  If you were seriously considering having
someone perform the frame swap for you, I would consider doing it for you,
but I don't think the parental units that live with me will let me do another
restoration again no matter what I get paid.  Times like these make me wish I
had a bigger garage and a town that doesn't bother us over every little
thing.  What I can suggest to you if you really want to get the ss frame, is
what Dave Swingle suggested, try to find a car that is in overall really good
shape, so that there won't be that many surprises when you are in the middle
of the job and strip the frame down, sell it to someone who has a rusted up
frame and get an SS frame for yourself.  That way everything else on the car
is in good shape and shouldn't need replacing.  Hope that helps and good luck!

I purchased a D that had been modified with NOS.  It had two bottles the
size of scuba tanks in the front trunk such that there was no room for the
spare tire.  I was told it ran great by the seller and so bought it sight
unseen.  Turns out that it did seem to run OK but there was a missing tooth
on the ring gear (!).  Seems I had forgotten to ask about that specifically.
Also both turbos were frozen (over rev?).  Anyway to my surprise the engine
itself was fine with the pistons still looking like pistons and everything.
I thought this was remarkable concidering what it had gone thru.  In my
limited experience with NOS I am not sure if it is an upgrade or a
downgrade.

The price tag WAS well above $25,000 in 1981.  My sticker was $27,650.  Keep in mind that a 911, one if the finest cars of all time and far along the development path was considerably less than that.  A Ferrari 308 was not that much more thatn the D's base either.  Most of us bought them new for the uniqueness of the stainless and the gullwings - not because they were the best at anything as there was not and is not a single area that the DMC-12 was superior to other cars in that price range.

Try a different inspection station.. In New Jersey, the Dyno testing is only
required on cars 1984 and newer.  They only need to do the idle test on older
cars.

When I moved from North Carolina down here to Louisiana, I had to rent a
car carrier rather than a tow dolly, because my car was rear wheel
drive, plus I didn't feel like putting 600+ miles on TWO tires instead
of four.  I must admit that those things are very nice and affordable.
The thing is finding the friend to go with me.  The guy I know has a
Chevy S-10.  I doubt he could pull the DeLorean, even though it weighs
... Hey, how much DOES it weigh, anyway?  And those car carriers weigh a
lot, too.  It two TWO of us fairly youthful strong guys to move one into
position behind a truck once, before I drove my car (93 Duster) on it.

At any rate, thanks for the advice!  I'm waiting to hear back on the guy
-- supposedly he was doing a bit of vehicle history examination ... To
let me know approx how much I will sink into this car.  I'm still
talking to insurance agencies.  There seem to be approximately 8,924,275
that will insure in the Greater New Orleans area ... I have called four
... And one is my current insurer, State Farm, who has said "We'll get
back to you in two days." (Two DAYS?  All they have to do is take my
existing policy, add another vehicle to it, and give me a quote.  Sounds
like it's time for a switch anyway!)

This problem is not very common on Deloreans. Do you have the fuel
flap and is the car left outside? On corvettes the fuel cap is in a
well under a cover with a drain that easily plugs up so on them at
least it is common to see water in the fuel if the car is parked
outside. More likely you refueled at a station that has a leaking
tank
and the water contaminated the fuel which you pumped in. Do you
regularly go to the same gas station, do you also take other cars
there? Remove as much water as possible and then add 1/2 quart of dry
gas to a full tank of gasoline, use it all up (as much as you can)
and
then refill the gas tank. Do not regularly mix in dry gas, only when
you suspect water in the fuel. Change the fuel filter afterwards and
you should be alright. To remove the water it might be easier to
remove the fuel pump and suck out everything and it also gives you
the
chance to inspect the interior of the tank.

I have replaced my stereo.  After 6 years of talking about it, I finally did it.

Here is the readers digest version of what I did:

I installed a Old Alpine (from 1984!) CD player I had in the garage (this will
be changed sometime in the future) by using the custom radio bracket from the
Mid-West DeLorean club.

The front speakers are 4", and mount flush with the dashboard.  I found that the
4" speakers made by Infinity were true Co-Axial speakers, but had a spacer ring
to make it mount flush.  The only problem I had was the mounting studs in the
dash were too short for the new speaker with the spacer, so I used some threaded
end caps from the hardware store and cut a slot in them with a dremel so I could
"screw" them in.  It worked great!

For the back, I decided to just leave the 4X10 speakers where they were because
it was not worth the effort to get to them and change them.  Besides, I wanted
to install some decent size woofers so I might as well put the full range
speakers in the same box.

I designed a custom box that fit in the parcel shelf.  The box has 2 Kicker 8"
woofers, each in it's own isolated ported enclosure.  The outer edges of the box
have a small sealed enclosure for the full range speakers. (4" mid range 1"
tweeter separates).

There are 3 amplifiers mounted on top of the box to power the system.

I am very happy with the results.  I had this setup in Cleveland, and played it
for a few people.  You may find some people on the list who heard it.

About your suggestion Dave, how much could a good condition frame be
sold for? Just a thought - would any of the DeLorean Service centres
be interested in keeping the old frame for spare parts (assuming it
is in good condition) against the cost of labor for swopping the
frames, and/or doing any other work on the car that might be needed?

Subject: Collecter plates was Emissions test and Transmission damage

As I understand the new law if your car meets the correct standards
for collecter plates then you do not have to go through the inspection
process sort of like antique plates. Mark Levy can give us more
details or I guess you can go to a local DMV office or the website. I
have to wait till my plates are up for renewal in September.Motor
vehicle laws vary state to state so I can only speak about New Jersey,
you must check the laws in each state and the insurance required.
