I really hate to do it but I am forced to.
Paint, YUK!
I promised myself a Delorean by my 35th birthday, well that is a
few weeks away and I don't have the 20 grand to lay out for a
really nice one so I have found one that needs tons of work, at a
price that I just can't pass up.
Problem is, it needs a lot of body work, nothing major but every
panel has something wrong with it. For what it would cost to
have them repaired or replaced, I would again be looking at the
20K total which I don't have.
I was wondering if anyone here had any pictures of painted cars
that they could send to me or direct me to any website that has
pictures. I would like to look at a few evamples before I made my
paint choice. (which right now it white).

Hey guys,
As some of you know, I'm a new DeLorean owner (4 months). So far, so good,
except for when I'm in the rain. A couple weeks ago I had a problem with
the cooling system, but a stainless tank and a new hose fixed me
up. Tonight (again in the rain), I felt the car acting sluggish as soon as
I started driving. I stopped at a gas station to make sure water hadn't
gotten into the fuel pump. There was a bit of water on the rubber boot,
but the boot wasn't loose or cracked. I dried it up and got on the
highway. I felt it acting sluggish again, so I pulled off at the next exit
and the car stalled. I pushed it to a lot, but somehow got it started
again. I crept 5 blocks to my office, having problems all the way.
So here's what I know about my car. I do not have a throttle cover. I
believe I read that this prevents rain from doing harm in some way or
another. I also don't have the muffler heat shields (but I can't see why
this would be it). That's all I know of as far as missing parts.
Does anyone have any advice? I just know that when I get to work tomorrow
the car will run fine until the next time it rains. I'd rather find the
problem and fix it than just dodge rain.
Also, since I'm new to the bay area, does anyone know a good DeLorean
mechanic in the south bay area? I saw a DeLorean parked in front of a
house literally right around the corner from my office in Mountain View,
so I know I must be close. :)

The pressure gauge is nothing special. All that is required is a guage
that reads to a maximun of approx 150 psi with a hose of suitable
length and an assortment of adapters to fit the trans test port.

I've heard of parts being ripped of people's cars but I have yet to hear
of a car actually being stolen. My feeling is that if someone REALLY
wants your car they are going to get it. No club or alarm or cutoff
switch will stop those with the talent for stealing cars. It's their
business and they are good at it. Here in Maine it's less of a problem,
mostly dumb hicks looking to steal radios (I'm a native Mainer so it's
ok for me to call them hicks, right?) It would be a good poll question
to see how many people have first hand knowledge of a DeLorean being
stolen. Look for this poll soon!!!

I would guess that the problem is water in and around the
spark plugs. Do your plug leads have gaiters that cover the
spark plug wells?

hey all,
i'm going to be doing my first oil change on my 82 delorean. i just got it
last week, and it's going into storage tonight. i just wanted to put some
fresh oil in it over the winter.
the problem is, i can't find any books at my local auto stores that have a
filter listing for a delorean. can someone out there tell me which band and
type to buy?
what seems to be the best filters in a delorean? i probably don't need the
best since it will be in storage and i'll do another oil change when i get it
out next spring.
any input is appreciated,

There are a few things you could check out.
First, shine a flashlight into the vent at the rear of the passenger
side quarter panel. This is where the engine takes in it's air. Look
down and see if anything is blocking the drain to allow water out. If
this is clogged water may be getting into your intake messing up the
compustion process. Also follow the intake plumbing from the pontoon
to the air cleaner assembly. If you accidentally torn or loosened
somthing when replaceing your header bottle, this could also allow
water to get into the engine.
Another possible problem could be the boots around your spark plugs
and fuel injectors. If they are out of place or damaged, water may be
seaping into the engine or plug wells and causing similar problems as
water in the intake would.
Watch your temperature. Without a heat shield around the muffler, it
could be heating up your engine more than it can cool. A hot (but not
yet overheated) engine can loose performance, but probably nothing
like you described.
The throttle shield recall is primarily so the throttle spool doesn't
freeze or stick. If your pedal has full movement without any
problems, dont worry about it. (Just dont drive below freezing).

The two parts cars that I have were stolen. Not by me, but back in
1982 when the company went out of business. They were stolen at the
same time from the same lot. The thiefs raced around a little and
then crashed one, and lit the other on fire.
They got into the one they crashed by using a crowbar on the door and
pulling the stainless away from the window. The other had the window
smashed out. Ironicly, they had the key to turn the car on...and
no...they weren't early '81s...they were '82s. Can someone say
"insurance fraud". Anyway, there's my first hand of 2 deloreans
getting stolen.

Christian, I can beat that. My DeLorean conked out on me about six times in
the first month I owned it. I was worried that I had acquired a lemon. John
Truscott of the DOA was very helpful and encouraging to me, and he diagnosed
that I had a fuel problem.
It turned out to be very simple: my DeLorean stopped running every time it ran
out of gas! The gas in my tank was all in my head.
The reading on my gas gauge had no relationship to what was in my tank. The
problem was with the original fuel sender, which (on my car) was very
unreliable. If your DeLorean has not been upgraded to a Tankzilla, then at
the very least you should find out about any quirks your fuel gauge system may
have.
My advice to new owners with this sort of trouble is: Before you try to
"repair" your car, make sure you have plenty of gas by some means other than
the fuel gauge.
You do need to worry about water on the fuel pump. The windshield drain that
drowns DeLorean fuel pumps is a well-known design problem from the factory.
Search the DML back issues for discussions of symptoms and cures.

WARNING! THIS CAN BE DANGEROUS!
The throttle cover does not just prevent harm from coming to your DeLorean.
It also protects YOU. Without the cover, water can get into the throttle
cable, where it can sit for months. If the temperature drops below freezing
you could develop ice in your throttle cable, which can leave you unable to
control the speed of your engine. Obviously this is dangerous. Install
something to cover that area.
Or move to the desert.

My Delorean could possibly be overheating. I took it out today for a
drive and the temperature gauge rose all the way to 260 degrees. the
cooling fans cut on and off occanionaly. i let the car idle at 260
degrees for about 5 minutes and nothing happened. i then tapped the
accelator and the temperature gauge went down to 220. Does this sound
like the gauge is wrong? Or is more serious?

I had a similar experience in Auburn, Indiana last year, which was quite
unnerving since South Carolina is home. The car acted very sluggish and
wouldn't take extra gas. It was pouring rain on the interstate, and I could
only go more than 55MPH without the car sputtering. At first I thought the
problem was the fact that I was low on gas. It ran fine after I filled it
up. I had a problem two mornings later when there was a heavy fog all night.
I continued to have this problem once I got the car home everytime there was
heavy moisture in the air be it from rain or fog. It turned out that my
distributor had a small crack and moisture was collecting inside the cap. A
new distributor and plug wires and the problem was solved.

To all we read about repairs and problems with our D's, I just got back from
the DOA convention in Las Vegas. 1728 miles round trip and the only little
hitch was a tail not working (bad ground connection). Sure beat's the heck
out of all those new cars sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow
truck. Not bad for a 19 year old car. Road conditions ranged from bright
sunshine to packed snow on the way home. Mileage ranged from 25 to 28 mpg at
70 mph. So to all who wonder how dependable the D's are, this one run's like
a champ with 56k miles on it now. Last comment, used less than 1/2 quart of
oil and some of this is a small oil leak that we haven't repaired yet.

The specific dates have yet to be set, but were looking at mid to late

Subject: no dash lights
Hello List,
I took my car out at night for the first time last week and noticed the
lights that light up the dash gages are not working.(4 across top I think) I
dont have the binnacle on right now, just the instrument cluster fastend
down. The bulbs are good and there is no corrosion on them. I checked the
fuse and its good and the connectors are not pushed down into the fuse box
body. Is there a wire connector further under the dash before the wires that
go to the instruments go into the main harness? I've been finding some
connectors that are pretty corroded. (ie, under T panel, engine cpmt.) what
would be the next thing to look for? I would like to get this fixed before I
put the binnacle back on it next week. these turn on when headlights are on,
right?

Why is paint so bad? Our car is always the topic of conversation at any

IMHO when I store my car I don't change the oil. Unless the oil is
VERY old and completly black modern oils have a very high capacity to
hold dirt and moisture. I change the oil in the spring along with the
filter after a good warm-up.
Now is a good time though to get familiar with the Delorean vender
of your choice. Yes,you could find a filter that will fit but it may
not be of as good quality as one you can get from the venders of
Delorean parts. They also give you a new copper gasket for the drain
plug and I'm sure there are some "bits" or other parts that you could
also order like a magnetic drain plug or a spare bulb or fuse. Order 2
filters so you don't have to go looking for 1 next year. If we as
Delorean owners don't buy from the venders who make a livelyhood
exclusivly supporting our cars then who will?
