I saw the TNN show tonight.  It was a great segment in the show.  The only
thing I noticed was that they gave the incorrect wheel sizes (they said 15
and 16in.).  --But considering all the normal inaccuracies in other
publicity, I guess we can deal with wrong wheel sizes!

Rodger:  You did a great job of keeping things accurate and positive.  Your
car is beautiful.  Congratulations on your TV appearance.

Roger,

Congratulations, here are answers to your questions

> Should a replacement torsion bar be high on the priority list?
If the door torsion bar splines are damaged it should be replaced.

> Is there a starter interlock in the 5-speed gearbox system?
There is no starter connection through the manual transmission.

> Car starts fine but once I had to turn the key a couple of times,
Based on your Vin your DeLorean may not have the factory issued starter
modification which was issued to correct intermittent starter operation.

> Is a "Tankzilla" conversion recommended
The Tankzilla is a fuel gauge up grade, for the cooling fans you will need
the Fanzilla.

> - What are the dimensions of the heat shield?
There are several heatshields, which one are you describing.

Subject: NJ "Collector" class (WAS: Catalytic converters)

I recently registered 2 of my cars under the new "Collector" class in New
Jersey.

After going through the process, I cant say that it is of any benefit to us.

1.  The cost is $25 (In addition to your regular registration)
2.  You still have to go to Inspection, and wait for them to get to you (I spent
45 min waiting)
3.  They (only) check your odometer, and you are limited to 2000 miles a year.

After speaking with the people at the Freehold and Eatontown inspection
stations, they said that cars older than 1984 DO NOT get tested on the Dyno.
They instead use the old idle method.

While my "modified" car will pass the idle test, I tend to get a lot of
questions about missing components..  For the past 7 years playing dumb has
always worked to get me through.  The one advantage is that there will be no
questions with the "Collector" registration.

Meanwhile, NJDMV is not clear on the penalty for going over 2K miles a year.  If
I drive to Memphis in 2002 there is a good chance I will exceed that 2K limit.

So now, after the fact, I question if it was a good move or not.  I keep bugging
my insurance company that there should be a discount on a car with this new type
of registration, but in NJ all insurance is regulated buy the state...  Needless
to say, there will be no discount!

YMMV!

Subject: Re: Protecting your D...

Richard,

This has been discussed a few weeks ago on the DML.  The quote that I like
best was from someone who said something to the effect of, "Have you seen a
Delorean?  Yeah, it went that way."  These cars are not anything that you
can go around town in and not be noticed.  I had a guy stop me by the door
of a restaurant that I frequent asking me if I was the guy with the
Delorean.  And I didn't even drive the Delorean that day!

I think that it would be a cool idea at future Delorean shows to have a
video camera filming people getting in and out of their cars.  We could have
contests to see who looks the coolest while doing this.  So many people
watch me open & close those doors that I sometimes feel self conscious.  (Is
my hair straight, is my fly open, do my socks match?).  It's almost like
waving a big stainless steel flag every time you open a door.

I would think that if anyone stole a Delorean, they would have to be very
familiar with what they are getting into.  I've watched passengers get in
and out of mine.  It's rather funny watching them try to figure out how to
open the door from the inside.  If the average person has trouble figuring
out how to get in and out of the car, I can imagine the trouble that some
idiot would have trying to steel one.  And if he got away with it, someone
somewhere would recognize the car or even parts from the car.  I can
describe just about every little imperfection in the body of mine.

About using a club... I don't normally put one on my Delorean because I've
used one (the Club brand) on another car with a leather steering wheel, and
it damaged the leather on the wheel.  Somehow the vinyl or plastic or
whatever the stuff is has managed to scuff the leather.  I'm not sure how it
did this, but it has done it in several places.  I think it has something to
do with the rubbery club parts sticking to the leather and then having the
hot sun and gravity pull the club down once it has gripped the leather.
Before I put a club on my D again, I'm going to cover the rubber pieces with
a felt sleeve.

Hi Group-

The correct address for the company that is making the diecast DeLorean is <www.sunstartoys.com> .Here is the contact info if someone wants to call or write them regarding the new model.

tel:(510)670-0882

fax:(510)670-0883

e-mail: <uscic@xxxxxxx>

Their site has nothing listed on the D yet. Once a release date is announced, I will probably order mine through exoticar model company <www.exoticar.com> they specialize in 1/18 scale die cast cars, and they have the lowest prices around. I have bought from them before. Hope this is helpful-Louie

This touches on a theme that is fairly common on the reflector that I
thought I would share my thoughts on. I call the theme "my thingymabob does
not work, should I upgrade the system with a dohicky."

The FanZilla and other 'Zilla upgrades available from PJ Grady are great
products, but I think there is an important first step missing. The 'Zilla
products (and many other upgrades available from various DeLorean suppliers)
enhance the functionality of a correctly functioning system. Such upgrades
should not be a substitute for conducting repairs to malfunctioning systems.
My simplified three-step DMC repair process is:

1) Diagnose the source of the problem
2) Replace the defective component or otherwise conduct repairs to correct
the problem
3) Verify that the repair corrected the problem

All too often, step #1 is skipped and owners proceed directly to #2. My
apologies to Roger for using his post as the catalyst for my message -- his
question is a good one and not one to gloss over. I just wanted to increase
awareness and focus with the group on diagnostic procedures as an essential
first step to making DMC repairs. In the case of the cooling fans staying on
all the time, this can be caused by many different problems including the
car's wiring having been modified by the previous owner. Before installing
the FanZilla (which I recommend as a great improvement -- I'm really happy
with mine), I recommend that the current fan malfunction be first diagnosed
and corrected. The FanZilla is a great product but it will not conduct
repairs to other malfunctions in the system.

Subject: Re: Protecting your D...

I don't really believe that DeLorean's are targets for theft. Most
car thieves who steal cars don't get much $ for the vehicles they
get. So there's not really an incentive to risk taking another car
you don't know anything about, or how long it will take you to make
off with it?
The people who buy them need to move the cars in a hurry. Whether
they are stripped for parts, or sold to other people, they have to go
fast. A DeLorean would be way too hard to unload, and too noticable
not to trace. Just think; If you're running a successful operation,
would you be willing to risk it all because of 1 car?
As for a "black market" for DeLoreans, I'd have to say no here
as well. Most cars that would be targets are rare classics such as
old Jaguars, Ferraris, and other very rare classics/exotics. The only
D's that might fall into this catergory would be the gold cars, and
MAYBE somthing extremly unique such as VIN 502. The biggest factor is
(this is gonna hurt) there really are not many people who want
DeLoreans THAT badly that they would hire a professional to "acquire"
one for them. With the price of DeLorean's being what they are, it
would be easier to just buy one from the owner.

Hope this helps other owners sleep a little easier at night!

Subject: Leaky...

Hi folks,
THanks to all that helped with the 'mystery noise'. Turned out to be a
loose can in the trunk(I've been fooled twice now by that one!). Now I have
another problem. I went out to my car yesterday and the floor was wet. It
rained, a lot, here for the first time in 4 weeks. I did drive through some
puddles, although none as deep as the doors.(I know better).
The floor is just damp, is you lift a the carpet there is a thin film of
condenstation under the front carpet on both the driver/passenger side.(On
the passenger side, you can feel it through the carpet) This is the only
part wet. All other sections of the trunk, seats, interior are dry. What
could've happened? I just got it back from a 500mile trip when I encountered
the problem. I ran the heater the whole way, if this helps.
I tried looking for a leak but couldn't find one. Just the 'black'
fiberglass floor underneath. Could this just be condensation?(Although it
was enough to dampen the carpet. I did drive from 75 F temps to 20 F temps.
Can anyone help? Thanks.

Subject: Frequency valve

Hi list/DMC joe

I was reading a manual published by Bosch, which covered K jetronic,
which said the frequency valve recieves a constant 12v feed and the
ECU pulses the ground. If i connect a voltmeter across the terminals,
i should get a pulsing 12v? correct?. If there is 12v across the
valve, if i connect 12v direct i should be able to feel/hear the
valve clicking?. When the valve has no power i assume it is shut,
which mean if its not working the engine will run rich? Could this
cause the cat to glow red?

If there is not 12v at the valve I should check 12v at the lamda
relay which runs to the frequency valve? and continuity of both 12v
and negative from the ECU to the valve?

If the Lambda sensor is not working or disconnected i assume the
valve just work as it should when could on a fixed ratio? This should
eliminate the sensor if its causing a problem?

Thanks

A good example of this happened just recently in the shop. A customer
came in with malfunctioning door locks, and wanted to know if he
needed a Lockzilla. We suggested that first we should examine the
cause of the problem, and upon investigation - HE ALREADY HAD A
LOCKZILLA. He had recently purchased the car and didn't know the
Lockzilla was installed. We reset the integrated circuit breaker on
the Lockzilla and all was well...for a few days, and then the problem
came back. We had shown him how to reset it, so he reset it and all
was well well again...for a few days. After tiring of resetting the
circuit breaker, he brought the car back in. After some
troubleshooting and further investigation, we diagnosed the ROOT of
the problem and corrected it properly. He still has the Lockzilla,
but doesn't need to reset the circuit breaker at all anymore.

Robert,
Since were plugging products, I guess I will rasie my own flag.
( The Fan Fix ) was designed to fit the fan problem and to address
the low voltage problem at the same time. With proper product applied
to the problem and it doesn't cost a arm and a leg to Fix it $65.00.
It doesn't cover it up or anything else. It just flat Fixes it.
Something I'm sure De Lorean would have done if given the time. The
( De Lorean 140 )amp alternator is another product I build that will
give the De Lorean plenty of power in those needed applications.I do
it for almost half of other peoples cost with Delco parts and life
warr. The De Lorean has some underated relays used in certain
applications that i'm sure again it would have changed. I matched the
right product to the problem. Same as in the (The Fan Fail Fix). I
match the right products to the problem to correct it, not cover it
up.
If you have heard of the old saying, get the heat out of the kitchen.
That's what i do with the Main Relay that operates some of the most
critical parts of the car. Get the heat out of the kitchen. ( Amps )
That's what I do with what I build.
Hopes this helps in your decisions of what to buy, do or build
yourself in the future.

Subject: Fuel Injector flex lines

My friend and I were discussing the DeLorean fuel injection system today and we came up with an issue that I am curious about whether or not our conclusion was correct.  The question is:  If I were to replace my fuel lines supplying the injectors and installed the wrong hose size (larger inside diameter than stock), would this effect the operation of the system in any way?

Our conclusion was that no matter what the size of the tube, as the fuel in added by the fuel distributor, the amount exiting should be the same as stock.  In other words, the fuel line is only a reservoir for "holding" the fuel as it is moved to the injector.

I just found a low mileage (nct tires and all) DeLorean for sale
It runs good, looks good,  needs a little cosmetic work but it can be cleaned
up to concourse level.  Frame and undercarriage is clean (undercoated)
It is an 83 VIN 16899 5 speed very clean interior.

e-mail is slavsrwe@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

It is listed in Hemmings for $19,000 firm.
and its less than a mile from my house.

Chris,
I know you directed your QA to DMC Joe . But you have to have an oscilloscope
or a dwell meter to see the 70cps and the opening and closing of the FQ
valve. My scope will capture the time of opening and closing so I can check
lambda / FQ valve for proper operation. But the trace is to light to put on
the web site. Try to find someone with a scope or dwell meter to connect to
the diagnostic plug or terminal 17 of the lambda. Then you can see whats
going on.

Check the bolts on the bottom of the car that hold the seats in
place. Water had a habit on my car of leaking in around these bolts.
Some clear, non-shrinking siliconeII did the trick!
