My DMC cost 7700- of course, it was in need of some parts here and there.
Lets see, as of now....

Warm up regulator
master cylinder
new weatherstripping
recovering seats
repainting facias
computer governor
new binnacle
floor mats
full load of freon
new pistons
torsion bar adjustment
new window motor
new lock solenoid
various updates
fuel pump, fuel tank, fuel baffle
all coolant hoses
new belts

and after a complete breakdown of the passenger side door--
new filler panel
new t panel
door alignment
fiberglass repair

altogether, costing me around 8000 in repairs.  Not the cheapest car to
have, but I did buy mine as a restoration project.

Scott

Ask the editors Car and Driver and Motor Trend in 1981...I think C/D
compared it with the 308, and Motor Trend with the Mondial. I think
Tamir's web site has copies of both articles online.

Thanks for recommending that, I've been to his website, but never saw that
part of it. Reading those articles is like nostalgic, still happy info like
John Delorean planning for 20,000 dmc12s the first year.

Subject: The Resurrection of Vixen Continues...

Well,

It's been a while since my last update, and I still haven't done very
much.  I seem to have reached a point where I just wander aimlessly
around the garage looking for little tasks to complete.  The trouble is,
there isn't much left for me to do right now except spend money. And I'm
not much of a fan of spending money...

I just plunked out around $1200 for new front and rear fascias, and that
puts me at the end of the available cash.  I had budgeted for around
$18,000 for the whole project.  I came up with that number by doing a
thorough inventory at the beginning, and figuring a 75% cost of new on
parts (I was buying as much used as possible).  I then figured in an
extra 30%, because pretty much everything I ever do ends up costing me
around 30% more than I planned.  But, there's still the interior (around
$1500), the body work (probably at least $1000), some glass ($300) and
new seats ($1500).

That's a lot still to spend, but overall, I'm not far off budget.  I'm
actually around $1000 under.  So, I'm going to treat myself to some new
tires ($300) and some stereo upgrades ($300) that I originally had not
planned on.  Things are doing well... except... for that darn cash flow
problem.  I'm running about $4000 short right now.  But, when life hands
you lemons, ya' gotta make lemonade.  And in this case, I've got to sell
that lemonade for a profit.

Many of you are familiar with my "Backside to the Future" sales.
They've helped a lot, and I thank each of you who have bought a pair.
But sales on those have been slow recently, and I still need to make a
bit more cash.  Thus, I've turned to eBay with a ton of
non-DeLorean-related items. I've been fortunate enough to be able to
grab tons of surplus computer equipment from work.  In addition, our
advertising section has liquidated, and I was able to purchase some
extremely high-quality professional audio and video equipment for the
low price of $650 for two Mercury Grand Marquis's full of gear.  That's
a lot of gear.  The eBay value of the merchandise, from what I've
figured, is around $4500.  Therefore, my cash flow problem is solved.
But, listing & packing & mailing all of that equipment takes forever...
so, I'll be out of the garage for a while.  That's probably fortunate,
anyway, since I have all of that equipment stacked in there right now.
You can barely see the poor car.

Since there's not much for me to do in there at present, it all works
out for the best.  I'll be taking all of my body panels with boo-boos to
Dave Bauerle over in Ohio to be pounded out and rebrushed soon.  By the
time they're done, I should have the rest of the cash I'll need to
complete the car.

Who would have ever thought I'd even get -this- far?

Subject: Re: Colored Deloreans -- not painting per se

I think in the book "Stainless Steel Illusion" it mentions that
DuPont was working on a type of coating to color the SS panels into
various colors. But it was supposed to act more like a tint where
the panels would be a different color, but you could still see the
grain underneath. Not like a paint that would totally cover the SS.
The end results were that in humid climates the coating would bubble
and peel off. However the book does not mention weather the coating
was applied as a film, or sprayed on as a liquid. Nor does it mention
weather the tests were performed on a DMC-12, or in a lab.

As to 'wall papering' a DeLorean, of the handfull of Country Squire
station wagons that are left on the road I've seen, I've yet to find
one that still has the vinyl attatched (or even in good condition).
And for painting over the film, I don't know that paint would stick
very well to the tint, or the tint to the SS.

It's a good idea though, and it would be interesting to see the
results. Maybe one day someone will decide on a new hobbie and pick
up where DuPont left off...

Subject: Re: low profile rims for Delorean

Dear Dan,

I just fitted a set of rims  purchased from www.discounttiredirect.com  I am
really pleased as the fit and offsets are perfect!
They are running a special on "Konig, Monsoon" rims and these are one of the
few that offer the large rears with the 4 lug.  They are mfg. in Germany and
the quality is excellent.
      Fronts are: 15x6.5" 4-100 w/40mm offset ($125.ea) with 205/55R-15 B F
Goodrich Touring T/A at $64.ea
      Rears are:  17x8" 4-100 w/20mm offset ($168.ea) with 245/50R-17 BFG
Comp T/A's at $129. ea
This put the whole set out the door incl. mount and balance for under
$1000.!

Front tire dia went from 23.2" to 23.9" (+2.9%) (one size smaller tire might
be better, like a 50 series)
Rear tire dia went from 26.1" to 26.6"  (+2.1%)

FYI: Hub pilot is 72mm  Studs are 12mm x 1.0 pitch

They really do look great.  Historically I have chromed/black painted the
stock rims and while they really look good, these are much more agressive
looking.  I am pulling out a twin turbo and installing a Northstar in this
runner, so have not driven it yet.

Subject: Re: delorean pricing, first time driver

Suprizingly I drove the car 300 miles home, and for the next 4 month
with no real problems, besides the fuel accumulator.  It was over the
winter that it broke down, starting with the waterpump.  When I took
it to Micah Fryman (thats where it is at right now) to get work done
to it, he told me that I had a lot of angels watching me because it
was VERY unsafe.  My steering rack was dry and distroyed, my trailing
arms were rusted through, my engine was leaking oil, the electical
was a mess and very dangerous.  I even had some parts on the car that
suprized him, like a steel clutch line.  As in, not a hose.  It was a
bent pipe that was supposidly the cool thing to install in the early
'80s to replace the plastic hose.  I also has some weird things
bolted onto my frame that messed it up.  If Micah is learking out
there, maybe he could inform us on my badly treated Delorean.  you
wouldn't believe some of the things that was wrong with this car.
The steering rack was installed backwards and upside down!!  It WAS a
real mess.  it's not like that any more.  All but the frame has been
replaced, but that will get done soon.
So the moral of the story is...don't be too excited when you first
see a Delorean that you might buy.  Thats what I did.  Bring someone
along with you who knows a lot about Deloreans, or at least what to
look for.  When I was looking at this Delorean all that I said was
"oh, the dashboard can be replaced no problem, so can the dents, the
fascia and headliners.  No bid deal."  All that right there is a
couple thousand dollars!  BE CAREFUL, there are crap Delorean out
there!
I'll shut up now.

Just like the starters, ignition coils, and CV boots the speedo cables are among the DeLorean parts that have a less than 1% failure rate. As Bruce indicated all that is needed to keep the DeLorean speedometer working is a shot grease about every 5,000 miles.

I'd be inclined to think that 90 weight oil added at the frequency you've
been doing will find it's way into the speedometer head sooner or later and
cause a mess. I use a grease gun ( the same grease I lube the chassis with)
with a finely pointed adapter ( available at autostores ) to shoot a bit of
grease into the hole opened up by removing that small screw on the underside
of the drive. I do it about twice each summer or every 5,000miles. It seems
to work as my speedometer is still going.

Subject: switching door locks

Hello,
I purchased a door complete with everything in it but the guy didnt have
a key for it.  Before I tossed my old door I removed the lock bezel from it.
my old door has the small little piece that covers the key hole when the key
is removed, the lock that is currently in the door doesnt have the small
piece that covers the hole.  are all lock units interchangeable?  I would
like to put the lock unit from the old door into the new one.(so I have one
key for both doors)  I dont want to get my door all taken apart and find out
it wont fit.
Also, is the door key supposed to be cut differently on each side of the
key?  I have taken it to 2 places that make keys and they said they have
never seen a key cut differently on each side......hmmmmm  any info would be
greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Subject: Re: electrical problems relating to fuel pump

Placing the jumper between the two wires causes the fuel pump to
run.  The car will still not start however when this jumper is
connected.  I replaced the main fuel relay and that is not the
problem either because the car will still not start.  There is a
white and purple wire that goes from the fuel pump to the RPM relay
and this is only showing about 4 volts with a volt meter when tested
between the connection to the RPM relay and the stainless steel on
the car.  When I try to start the car it moves up to about 6-7
volts.  I am not sure what the significance of this is because I
think it should only be 12 volts if the relay closes, but it is just
an observation.  This did lead me to think however that it is
possible that the wire betwen the relay and the fuel pump is
damaged.  Evidence supporting this theory would be that it was the
only wire I touched when I changed the fuel pump (because I needed to
disconnect it.)  What doesn't make sense however is that the car
started without me touching that wire, and then subsequently died.
But it only did this once.

I am thinking about getting an OHM meter and testing the white/purple
wire.  What else should I look at now?

Thanks again.

As you can see from my last post, I am suspecting that white/purple
wire to be a problem.  I will get an ohm meter and test out the wire
you are speaking about also.  Hopefully that helps.  Thanks, and I
will let you know what happens.

ps.  If it is that wire, how hard was it to replace?  Do I need to
lift up the car?

Subject: DeLorean/VW Corrado Similarities

Hi list,

I thought this link may interest some of you. It's a Volkswagen Corrado
European sports car.

Look at the photos - interior and exterior - you can see lots of
similarities between this car and our beloved DeLorean.

Many people talk of the huge Giugiaro influence at VW. The Audi Quattro from
the 80s was another car from him that resembled the DeLorean after DeLorean
was out of business (esp. the front of the car).

The latest Volkswagen Giugiaro product now is the Corrado.

Maybe this would have been the DeLorean of the 90s? With gullwing doors of
course! Personally I think the Corrado resembles the Medusa, which DeLorean
had planned to be his 4-door DeLorean.

I will not start a new thread here ("DeLorean compared to other makes") but
I would like it if you will e-mail me privately on what you think of the
DeLorean/Corrado similarities. I may use your comments on a webpage Im
building where I compare the DeLorean to the Corrado.

Subject: Delorean Overheating (almost)

I'm a pretty new delorean owner. (about six weeks). well anyways i love the
car, it's incredible, but i have a question about overheating that i was
hoping someone could answer. The car has not overheated yet, but in stop and
go traffic, the thermometer gage comes close to the overheating point. The
oil and coolant levels in the car are fine, and i had the original coolant
bottle replace w/ a stainless steel one. I know delorean's have a tendancy to
overheat b/c of the plastic coolant bottle, but as i said, i replaced it. If
anyone has any ideas, or if this is normal for a delorean, i would appreciate
some input. Thanks

Subject: Re: Buying a DeLorean - The First Time Owner - First Car

Dear DML,

I purchased my DeLorean when I was an undergraduate student at the
University of Maryland. During the course of the first year of ownership with
my first DeLorean, I acquired another DeLorean for a short time and drove it
everyday with no problems, only a permanent grin on my face and wonderful
memories.
The first DeLorean car needed some professional service, so I had it
shipped to Long Island New York to Rob Grady. (I cannot stress the importance
of having the DeLorean cars repaired or serviced buy a professional DeLorean
specialist like Rob Grady & staff)
Another owner contacted me and asked me if I wanted to buy his low
mileage DeLorean. Since I already had a new Acura, along with the DeLorean, I
decided to test the reliability of the great stainless steel, gullwinged
wonder. I purchased another DeLorean.
The cars were garage kept. (another importance) I parked the Acura , and
the DeLorean was driven everyday through out the streets of Washington DC,
its suburbs, and those road trips to no where at 1:30 in the morning.  I
drove the DeLorean at speeds in excess of the posted limits to spring break
in South Beach Miami, pounded the streets of NY for New Year's Eve at Times
Square in Manhattan, and gingerly through New England Snow storms to go
skiing. (They drive well in snow)
The car performed very well as a daily driver.  I had to replace the
typical stuff on ANY car. Battery, tires, belts, one hose, fuses, relays, the
DeLorean factory recalls, and the door lift pistons. I was very satisfied
with the performance, and reliability of my Automatic DeLorean. I had only
one minor "inconvenience" and that involved taking my date to a Hotel
instead...but that is another story. ;-))
I was approached buy a young man who wanted the car, and I later sold my
second DeLorean to him. He still has the car, and takes very good care of it.
I still have the original DeLorean, an early 1981 model and another 1983 DMC.
I was once disappointed or discouraged with the expensive repair bills
($25,000 in repairs so far) but you only live once....you might as well enjoy
it or you're saving the car for someone else.

I wonder how many of the 6k or so deloreans are still out there and how many
are in good condition? Isn't there a website with like buyers checklists in
stuff for the delorean?

If you just had the bottle replaced, I would check and make sure that
there is no air in the cooling system. Bleed it out.

Subject: Re: delorean pricing, first time driver

I feel that I am qualified to talk about $10,000 daily driving deloreans.
I purchased my second DMC this past december, with 113,000 miles on the
body and transmission, but a brand new engine from DMC Houston with about
150 miles on it.  I test drove the car for the fist time, and it was scary.
There were no seat bealts, the air did not work, and the seats did not
adjust.  There were also several dings, and some major fiberglass damage
(which was unoticeable unless you looked under the car).  The one thing the
guy told me it really needed was a new radiator.  I took it home, none of
the lights worked, the passenger window got stuck, and I had to help my
poor father get out of the car, since the passenger Door was jammed.  But
hey, I got a Delorean with a $5000 NEW engine in it for 10000 dollars.
IT is a true daily driver it already had ss lines all around, it also had
new calipers. It was rdy to drive.  I was able to troubleshoot my lights
problem, and every week I added some antifreeze, cause the radiator was
leaking.
Now let me get to the point.  I put in maybe about $500 for certain items,
which absolutely needed to be replaced immediately.  I could have driven
that car for a long time and all it would have cost me was 10,500.  I
decided however to take it to DMC Joe's shop, and I got a LOT more work
done there.  (redone steering, dash, seals, door adjustment, brass
radiator, A/c etc...) Now, parts and labour, I figure I have put an
additional $8,000 dollars into the car.  But now my DMC has doors that
open, and a Brand new Engine.
If your looking for a 10,000 car, and you find one like mine, I would
recomend getting it, even if its your only car, if it is basically
mechanically sound, you shouldn't worry.  I could have driven that 10,000
without geting anything done to it for a long long time.  Neither of My
Deloreans have ever left me on the side of the road, and I drive both of
them with great confidence.

Thats my opinon on $10,000 D's
