I'll go!!!!  I'm happy to say I will even bring my Delorean this
time.  After months of delays and new things added, I am proud to say
that I pick up 4512 Labor Day weekend.  The last time I drove it with
glory was the end of October of last year!  I wanted to take it to
Cleveland, but that didn't work, so this Canada thing would be
great!  Count me in!

Subject: Found my DeLorean cousin...

Dear Group,
    Yesterday my sister informed me that a DeLorean was located at a gas
station near her house.  I don't know about the rest of you, but when I know
of a D near me I like to go and check it out.  I immediately travel to this
gas station located about 5 miles from my house.  When I get there sure
enough there is a D sitting there with the driver's door barely open.  I
immediately notice it is an 81 D, louvers missing, that has seen better days.
 I don't bother looking too closely at it until I find out who the owner is. 
I ask the gas station mechanics who the owner of the car is and they tell me
it is some guy from Virginia who is in California right now (but the car has
NC tags on it).  After a little chatting with them, they give me permission
to look the car over as much as I like.  I approach the car to check its VIN
and to my surprise I see it is car #5003.  WOW!  It is only 3 away from mine.
 The mechanics say they have recently put a clutch in it, but it needs a lot
more work.  The car has been exposed most of its life to the elements and is
suffering from years of storage related problems.  I am glad to see that it
is still alive, but it is on life support.  Is the owner of this car on the
list?  If you are, I would like to talk to you sometime.  So now I have seen
D's just below (for reference #4998) and just above my own car.  I wonder if
I will ever see the other VINs right around my own??

Subject: Toll Booth Window- Fixed!

Dear DML,

Thank you for your kind suggestions on how to solve my
toll booth window woes.  What I ended up doing though,
was calling Steven Wynne at DMC Houston.  He said that
the problem was that the window was too far to one
direction or the other, and that was causing the
carrier to pop off the guide.  Even Gus' suggestion of
leaving the interior trim off helped a bit.  After
receiving help from DMC Houston, I went out to the car
and ran the window up and down, with interior trim
off, while watching what happened to the carrier and
guides.  While running the window up, I noticed that
the window was too far forward in the carrier, causing
the carrier to be pushed backward, pulling the front
end off the guide.  Went to an auto glass place and
had them take the window out of the carrier and got
some auto glass urethane adhesive.  Back at home, put
the glue on the carrier, and put the carrier back in
the door.  Slid the window back into the carrier, ran
the carrier up to the top, and used a screwdriver to
push the carrier up as far as it would go.  Waited for
glue to dry, ran window up and down, and success! The
carrier was no longer pulled off the front guide.
Hope this might be of help to someone who has the same
problem I did.

Group,

  I just had to share this weekends activities with the list. It was the the
worst and best Delorean experience all in one long day.
I left my home near the WI & IL line @ 0200 early Sat A.M. headed to
Lichfield, IL (about 225 miles one way) to have my new "D" Suspension package
put in. When I was about three miles from home I noticed my lights go dim and
a quick power surge. When I stopped I had four lights out. The driver side
red & yellow marker lights the rear driver running light and the front yellow
parking light.  I found I had a blown 15 Amp fuse in the #2 position (I think
that was the slot). I had the choice of several 20 & 30 Amps but nothing
less. Since it was 0215 in the A.M. and nothing open I had to go with a 20
amp. Not a good choice but better than no choice.

As I was going around a shape curve at 35 to 40 mph disaster stuck. First a
burning smell and then no lights anywhere on the "D".  No headlights, no
inside lights and I'm going around a shape bend like I'm blindfolded.  After
I managed to adjust my xray vision I drove the "D" to a lighted parking lot
of the "Ecolab" company. I looked things over and found my headlight switch
had stuck in the on position. I had no low beam headlights, no running rear
lights (I did have brake lights) no dash lights but the "D' still runs. I
decide to wait to daylight and make the run to Marty/Micah's. At 0600 I
started again with my "D" and no lights. On the way down my power windows
went out in the down position and near the end my radio quit too. But the
good news is I reach Micahs place at 0945.
After explaining my situation we went to work on the suspension, which went
very well thanks to Marty's expertise. What a great package.
Micah (The Greg Morris, "Mission Imposssible" type guy ) the electrical
wizzard of Litchfield, IL went to work on the melted remains of a once
funtional electrical system. At about 1830 we had the "D" back together with
an updated suspension, updated electrical relays and a complete inspection of
every wire and part in the fuse box area. Micah and Marty nearly rebuilt the
electrical system and suspension system in one day.I left Micah's at about
dark (tired, no sleep since Thursday night) but thrilled I was 100% ready for
the return. As I drove towards the interstate the real comfort of the new
suspension was nothing short of fantastic. Micah lives out in the rural area
with many bumps and stones. The "D" drove like a dream.

Then disaster hits a second time. I'm driving at 45 and the car shuts off.
Like some one pulled the plug. Now I'm three or four miles from Micah's, on a
country road, Its dark and I'm walking to Micah's.  A guy with a pickup pulls
up looking for directions from me and he's more lost than I am. He agreed to
take me to Micah's where I assured him the electrical doctor would direct him
to anywhere in the world he wanted to go. (I was desperate I didn't want to
walk the last mile or two I would have told him anything he wanted to hear to
get the ride.)
Marty, Micah, and I went to my "D" and found out a fuel pump relay had given
out. We went back to Micah's and from his array of new and used parts
inventory he came up with the right part.  In ten minutes I'm up and running
and back on the road.
The 4 hour trip back was shear Delorean fun. The car drove better than when
it was new. The suspension was better than I could have ever hoped for. The
electrical system was working perfectly and I pulled into the garage at 0120
today almost 24 hours later really tired, but one very happy camper. Thank
you Micah & Marty for turning a disaster into such a rewarding experience.
You guys are top shelf and I wanted the DML to know about some of the trurly
dedicated & helpful members we have out there.

Subject: Dead Fuel Sending Unit

Does anyone on the list have a dead fuel sending unit for sale, cheap?
The reason I want one is to try some expermentation with a Bosch unit
I found in a humpback Saab. I need to compare the resistance
readings, float values, and measure float movement etc. to try and
compare the differences between the 2 units.
If I can't make this work, I'll pop for the Tankzilla, but I want to
try. (I fried mine testing it with a battery charger).

Bob and others,

I have searched but cannot find the convex mirror that I originally bought.
Like I said, it was too large and I destroyed it trying to trim it, so I
gave up.

I made a cutout of my current mirror size and went looking again.  While I
don't think I found the one I used before, I did find another candidate.
It's Motormite "LOOK!" #51063.  I've put a scan of it in the vault (with a
US quarter for scale):

It will fit over the current mirror without modification, but barely.  It
has to sit crooked, and will catch if the breakaway mirror housing is folded
with the mirror toward the car.  But the visibility is sooooo much better!
I think to fit correctly it would need a cut on two sides, in which case
almost any mirror would do.  There were other Motormite mirrors that were
close, but they still looked like they'd need two cuts.  I still haven't
given up on finding an OEM mirror somewhere that will fit....

Subject: Rear Alignment How-To

        Hello All,

               I took my 81' to Sears to the other day to have the alignmnet
checked since it had been pulling to the left a little. They managed to get
the front end back in spec but they said that they couln't fighure out how to do
the rear. According to them and the computer the rear is out of spec . Could
someone explain to me how to do the rear so I can tell them how to. According
to their computer printout the spec range is .40degrees - .56degrees. I'm sitting
at .39 right now. I noticed that my car is still pulling to the left so I guess I need
to have it done. Can anyone help?

            P.S. The Kruse Auction in Auburn Indiana is coming up in a couple of weeks. I think last
                    year they had about 8500 cars there. I consider it a big car show.

You can search the archives for more on this subject, as it has been
discussed many times in the past.

I personally don't recommend owning a D for your 1st car, especially if you
only have $10,000 to spend. You can get a running, driveable D for that
amount if you look around enough, but it will still need a lot of work,
which means more money.

I tried this years ago with a Triumph TR6. I had just enough money to buy
it, then tried to use it as my daily driver until I could fix it up. All I
succeeded in doing was spending a lot of money on parts just to keep it
running and never had enough extra money or time to actually get it into
great shape. You'll probably find the same thing. A $10,000 D will run, but
probably won't be really reliable, so you'll end up spending lots of money
just keeping it running. Your family and friends will be convinced that
this is the most unreliable car in the world after giving you rides all the
time.

Other people on the list have mentioned the $20,000 rule. You can either
buy a good D for $20,000, or you can spend $10,000 for one, plus another
$10,000 to get it into shape (substitute any two numbers adding up to 20,000).

I strongly recommend having a 2nd reliable car to drive, at least while you
are working the bugs out of your D. They can be a very reliable car. But
since they are almost 20 years old, they are going to need a lot of work to
get them there just like any other car that old.

Lately, I've caught myself complaining about the high price of
Delorean parts. True, they are expensive, but in most cases are still
available, which is a miracle in itself. The Delorean dealers have
had to invest large amounts of money and time to find and warehouse
the parts; and have gambled that owners like you and I will buy the
parts to maintain our cars. As an owner, I want to keep my car in as
good a shape as I can afford, which means that I have to wait until I
have the extra money to replace non-safety items. I'd like to see a
discount club started from the suppliers for Delorean owners -
monthly 10% off deals, or something like that to show that they truly
appreciate our business. (which I know they do).
I am not in the Delorean Parts business, but do have another
collector car- a '57 Thunderbird that has fairly expensive parts, too.
The T-Bird suppliers do a different discount program monthly to
motivate us to spend more, and it works! I'm slowly doing a frame-off
on this car, and spend as I can on it as well. Having 2 "babies"
means I have to watch my restoration and maintenance dollars closely.

This is only my opinion, and is thrown out for whatever it's worth.

with your electrical system. What I really want to know more about
