Cecil,
As I understood oil gets black over time due to fuel that goes past the
rings and dilutes it and when the cylinder fires some exhaust goes by the
piston rings and that is what turns the oil black again over time. How ?
does this type of oil stop that.

I just pulled the pan off my engine after using only Mobil 1 in it for the
last 9 years. ( no problems but tapping the block for turbo installation)
The pan was clean with absolutely no sludge or grit. The car only has 26k
but it is over 20 years old too. I have pulled apart quite a few engines and
this is by far the cleanest pan I have seen.

It has made a believer out of me. I am sure there are many excellent oils
but for the occasional use many of our cars get I like the synthetics.

It is true that if you shake out the insides of the cat, the car will run
fine. In addition, the converter will no longer heat up red hot.
Realize that in some places you must pass an emissions test to re-license
the vehicle.
You can purchase a catalytic converter if necessary from several places
including delorean motor co in houston at www.delorean.com. If you are
running the car while partially plugged I suggest you be very careful about
the heat it generates.

Group,
A lot of you have seen by my web site that SpecialTauto.com is now
rebuilding brake calipers and selling calipers kits. Due to the
demand I'm in need of 2 or 3 more sets of rear calipers to Rebuild. I
will trade for parts on the my site or will purchase them at a
reasonable price. As you know I'm not buying them to hoard but to
rebuild and offer to the Delorean community. Please email me off line

Subject: Re: Removing angle drive spindle nut

You shouldn't need to loosen the spindle nut just to rotate the angle
drive. Notice the lubrication hole is upside down on our cars --
further evidence that this part was originally designed for right hand
drive, in which case the lubrication hole would be right side up! The
gear housing is NOT weathertight -- use a heavy weight lubricant. I
personally like Andrei Cular's idea of replacing the lubricant screw
with a grease zerk fitting.

To remove the angle drive altogether the big spindle nut indeed must
come off. I used a 1.25" wrench, which probably translated into 32mm
properly. To say mine put up resistantance is an understatement -- I
simply placed the other end of the wrench on my floor jack cradle and
used its hydraulics to easily break the nut free.

Don't forget that big nut holds your spindle on -- don't try driving
the car without it (you can drive the car without the angle drive, but
not without the nut). The angle drive is held to the nut by a lock
ring on the inside.

Correction, to my knowledge, only PJ Grady, DeLorean Parts Northwest,
and Special T Auto offer any solutions other than NOS. What are the
differences (if any), between the three-core radiators? Keep in mind
that I am in Arizona where summer days can be 120+ F and winter
nights can be close to freezing. So a hybrid metal/plastic radiator
may not have a very long life or be as effective as a radiator that
is only one material, be it all plastic or all metal.

Any upgrade will be an improvement over the origional radiator. It is
an aluminum core with plastic tanks crimped on each end. Every one I
see is green around the edges (not a good sign). My own looked pretty
good until I took it out. It was also green all over. I put in a brass
one with 3 rows of tubes. I did it not so much for any cooling
improvement but for reliabilty. I saw first-hand what happens when an
end tank blows off and there is NOTHING you can do except replace the
radiator. I got the radiator from P J Grady and am very happy with it.
I do not know what the other venders offer but I am sure it is either
just as good or perhaps better. It was a little pricey for a radiator
but if you figure what a tow can cost then it is cheap insurance. If
you have ANY doubts about your radiator then replace it and use new
(fresh) anti-freeze. It is a pain to do with all the little screws and
washers so take your time.

Ditto on that statement.

I am sure that the rest of the DeLorean vendors are just as good and caring,
but my experiences have mainlly been with PJ Grady and I can express what I
know.

The last deciding factor for me in purchasing my DeLorean was Rob and his
company "PJ Grady," some eight years ago. If it wasn't for Rob, I would have
not purchased my DeLorean. At that time there were no DML. If I am right,
the DML just got started less then a year after I made my purchase. So,
searching for information was based on the DeLorean Owners Association (DOA) and
the less then a half dozen of vendors that was available which was a time
consuming and aggravating event. A person such as Rob can make the difference
when it comes own a DeLorean, for he does offer his knowledge when asked,
whether you are making a purchase or not. The other great thing for me is he is
just 60 miles away from me, so what ever I need, he is just a short distance
away which makes repairs and picking up parts easier.

Rob sell parts that are OEM, NOS or reproduce parts that are equal if not
"better." They are safe and sound and they are "politically and business
correct." This means that the parts are acceptable in the DeLorean community for
use as replacement or as an "upgrade." All the parts that are sold are backed
up by him, besides the product liability insurance that stands behind the
parts. No "hokie pokey" parts sold.

So, when dealing with PJ Grady, one is are dealing with a man, his wife
Debbie and his top technician Pat who will offer you nothing but the best parts and
service money can buy and the money that is spent, is worth every penny.
Besides, who do you know that would open up the shop at 12 midnight to take in
my DeLorean, in tow when I had an emergency? His trusted technician Pat!!!

No brag, just the facts.

Heh, nothing like putting someone's name in your post to get them to
reply. :)

I haven't read all the posts on this topic, but let me tell you about my
steering problems.

My steering rack (1) was replaced earlier this year at DMC Garden Grove
and I had all sorts of problems with the replacement rack (2). There was
way too much slop in it. Every time I turned left and brought it back, the
steering wheel wouldn't come back to center (even though the car was going
straight). Dan (from DMC Garden Grove) sent another rebuilt rack (3) up
which a local shop put in. Again, same results. These racks were dirty,
the tie-rods flopped around freely, etc. Finally, I had Dan get one of Rob
Grady's racks (4) for me and send it up. When the part arrived it looked
completely different than the prior racks. It was sparkling clean, glass
beaded, brand new boots, tie-rods stiffer than... well, it was nice to
say the least. :)

The bottom line for steering racks? Rob Grady. Don't mess around with
steering racks. Mess around with trying to align your doors or trying to
come up with a way to keep fingerprints off the car.

FYI for those who are doing or thinking of doing a speedo face change and

I was able to find a (sorta) local shop for my recalibration.

I've not done any comparison, but I can certainly tell
you that after 60,000 miles with both Rob's triple
core radiator AND his refurbished steering rack, both
were superb investments.

As to the cooling, I run twin turbos which, as you can
imagine, add some heat (pun intended). I have sat
idling in 102º temp for nearly an hour and did not
overheat. Going up and down mountain passes in boost
also creates no problem.

As to the rack - awesome, simply awesome - still tight
as a drum after 60K miles.

Oh, and to add my 2$ to the motor oil comments, I,
too, use Mobil 1 and change as close to 3000 miles as
I can. Not only do I not have "coking" problems with
the turbos, but the oil is still transparent when I
change it.

My first experience with Rob was 2 years ago when my car failed MD inspection becasue of a steering rack that was shot. He quickly mailed it to my shop and they put it in and my car passed inspection.

The internet has no doubt helped save the Delorean as info and help can be spread around the world in a open forum. But unfortunatley for vendors, it also allows the customer to quickly shop prices in just minutes. People always gravitate to the lowest price. When I read the details of Rob's steering rack I felt lucky he decided to rebuild them.

The airlines have long complained the that the flying public wants airline travel to be dirt cheap, safe, fast and friendly with a meal to boot. People need to pay for quality and safety but they just don't want to. I have since spent thousands on parts from Rob with no problems.

It all comes down to cosmetics vs mechanical. As an example, The front radiator screen looks great in ss. However, at almost $200 it is an expensive piece for a part that almost no one can see. My only advice would be for Rob to try and package 3-4 of his ss parts into a "value meal" style pricing.

Rob has helped me many times on the phone and at the spring social's which he gets nothing for.

That would be because there isn't an engine management computer to put a chip
INTO!

computers in the DeLorean -
1. idle ECU - no reason to modify
2. lambda ECU - reads O2 sensor readings and converts to pulse width for
frequency valve which varies control pressure. i suppose you could hack it to
give more fuel to the cylinders, except the entire control pressure system in
REACTIVE rather than actually controlling anything.

everything else is mechanical or runs off of relays. no place to put a chip
in!

Matt,

High temperature paint is not required for painting the surfaces you
mentioned EXCEPT if you happen to be running a turbo setup. With
turbo applications, you may want to use high temperature paint on
areas that are in close proximity to the turbo(s) and exhaust.

Otherwise, I have always had the best results using Krylon semi-flat
black paint for the areas you mentioned, as well as the louvers.
Keep in mind that your paint job will only be as good as the prep
work you do on the surfaces to be painted and masking off the areas
you do not intend to paint. Make sure to have all oil, grease, etc.
removed, which is not always easy in the engine compartment.

Try to paint with low humidity and between 65 and 85 degrees, use at
least 2 coats and let eaxch dry at least 2 hours for best results.

Later,
Rich W.

Subject: Indiglo Dash Kits - a customer's brief thoughts

If your on the fence wondering about the Indilo Kit I would tell you to go ahead
and get it. The quality of the product is great, better than I expected. It also
looks good in the car (IMHO anyway). I love the snap/connectors for the wires so
if need be you can easily disconnect them when taking out the binnacle & cluster.
I asked for blue allumination and also received the option of green with the
toggle & dimmer switch. Instructions are OK, but the non-do-it-yourselfer may
need more. I know Jordan's How-To page can help with the binnacle removal
(http://retroserver.no-ip.com/delorean/deloreanmain.html). I wish the instrument
cluster overlays were 1 piece in stead of 3 to make it seamless, but for
installation purposes the 1 piece would be impossible to install without removing
needles.

I only have 3 small complaints:
- Without warning, Speedhut customized the "custom" speedometer face I sent (e.g.
changed MPH mark lengths, enlarged numbers, removed KM markings & numbers).
- For some un-known reason Speedhut does not put any KM markings on their
products. I wish I knew this before receiving the finished kit. To my Canadian &
other KM using friends, if you want kilometers on your speedometer your screwed.
- Being an "anal graphic designer" the resolution of printed output is a bit
jaggy (not like the 300dpi speedo face I sent), but at the distance being viewed
this is not a big issue.

Well, I guess I have one more complaint... I can't fully enjoy the new dash kit
because of all the Salt & Idiots out :-(

Do the threads in the angle drive cross right over to a specific

Subject: stock exhaust note

Hey group,

I've had several people lately tell me they love the way my car sounds. They usually comment this as I'm driving it near the redline :-). Everyone who has ever ridden in my car hasalso commented on how fast it was. I find that pretty cool since DeLoreans are known for being underpowered. Anyways, I find it surprising that people like the car's exhaust note so much because I *HATED* the way the DeLorean sounded when I first started being around the cars. I guess to me there's still nothing like the sound of an American V8. Though I still can't say I'm terribly fond of the DeLoreans exhaust sound, I do agree they sound pretty neat when they're near redline. So I thought I'd create a poll here to find out what everyone thinks of the stock DeLorean exhaust note. The poll can be found here, and voting concludes in 1 month-

Subject: The Motor Oil Issue

I have been reading with some interest the motor oil postings
because it seems that this is another flurry of these. It appears
that many, like me, simply do not know how or do not have the data
to evaluate the type of motor oil needed in their engine. Certainly
the technology in motor oil has expanded considerably since the time
the PVR engine was developed so reading the old manuals may not make
since. In addition, the standards by which oils are graded have also
changed considerably.

I wanted to understand motor oils more and, as a result, I
eventually acquired an e-book called "The Motor Oil Bible" by
Michael Kaufman (www.motor-oil-bible.com). If you want to know
ANYTHING about motor oils, I suggest you get that book.

Not to bore everyone with techno stuff, there are a few points I
would leave with you from "The Motor Oil Bible". First, the "w" is
not an indicator of weight but rather an indicator of cold
temperature performance; Think "winter". Next, I have been convinced
that the motor oil of choice in the DeLorean engine should be multi-
viscosity, fully synthetic motor oil like 0w-40, 5w-40, 10w-40, or
15w-40. The "w" factor simply being your desire or need for cold
engine starting/pumping performance. Finally, the filter has to be
top notch. All this means that I believe, after researching a lot of
information, the best oil for my DeLorean is Valvoline SynPower 5w-
40 (I live in NJ) and the best filter is a Hastings or NAPA Gold oil
filter (I have the elbow on the oil gauge sender to make room). If I
lived in Minnesota or Arizona I would use the same thing.

I change the filter every time I change oil ? once every twelve
months or 6,000 miles.

Sometime late last week, I spotted a DMC pulling in to
a gift store on Rt 192, just West of Disney World...
Next to a McDonalds. It was a lttile before 10PM.

It was late, and after a day of fighting crowds in the
"fun parks", I just wanted to go to sleep so I did not
stop to say hello.

Anyway, It is good to see more of these cars on the
road now than 10+ years ago when I spent months
looking to buy my first DeLorean.

I received my 20th Anniversary Edition DeLorean World today.

It is a very nice issue and includes a DVD with nice DeLorean drive by

Also, there are several travel articles along with an article describing a
$16,000 Stereo/Navigation system.

This will be a nice addition to my collection of DeLorean related

For those of you that want to see a step by step pictorial on how-to
install the Indiglo Dash Kit, we are currently installing one in our
Yellow Project D featured in Gullwing Magazine. Should be in the
upcoming issue.

We wanted to give everyone a look-see at this product so you can

Subject: Re: angle drive zerk grease fitting?

The threads do match up to a zerk fitting but the angle drive is made
out of soft metal so you can force it to fit. The bigger issue is that
you can develop a lot of pressure with a grease gun and if you are not
careful you will blow the side right off. IMHO it is better to use the
screw and a small hand powered grease gun with a blunt tip. This way
you can't put too much presure into the angle drive. Also a zerk
fitting will hold the pressure inside, if you use the screw the
pressure is released when you remove the hand greaser. For a job that
is done infrequently just be careful not to lose the screw.

A lot of people are impressed with the speed not so much because it is
so fast but more because you are travelling so close to the ground!
With today's SUV's you ride so high up it is really strange to be so
low in the Delorean.
