[doc] Warning!! Check your coolant hoses!!!!! (sorry, long)

Hi all,

well yesterday was supposed to go as follows - leave Belper at around
6am, drive to Essex and meet up with 'Stiff Tannen' and 'Tourettes
Tony' for about 9.30am, get my new clutch fitted, leave mid afternoon,
call in at my mums for a cuppa on the way home and be back in
Derbyshire for early evening.

This is what actually happened:

Left late at 7.30am because I had to turn round at Derby and come back
home, cos I forgot Tony's phone number (numpty). Then the M1 was
quite foggy through Leicestershire so traffic was slow. Around 8.45
am, just before J15, we're cruising at a steady 70mph, when there is
an almighty cloud of steam in my rear view, the temperature gauge went
through the roof and there was a huge 'POP' from engine bay. Shit!!!
We're on the hard shoulder and engine off within seconds.
Ok.......I've got RAC cover......so thats ok, but what the hell went
pop? We lifted the engine cover but there was too much steam to be
able to see what had gone. I called the RAC (who were brilliant as
always) and the first patrol had a quick look and could see a burst
hose. The one that burst is the short one between the metal water
pipes underneath the coil cover. A flat bed had also been requested
and that turned up a short while later and he took us to Essex (via
Porsche Centre Silverstone to pick up a 911 Targa).

When we got to Andy's, he changed the pipe for me and the old one is
absolutely shagged. Its all split inside and had literally burst
open. All I can say is thank goodness it went yesterday, and not on
the way to Eurofest. I'm of course now concerned about the state of
the rest of my coolant pipes under the car, as they are all 25yrs old
now and probably all in a similar state.

Please everyone, check your hoses!!!! Remember how old our cars are
now, things are starting to perish and some of us are using our cars
alot now and probably putting additional stresses on the cooling system.

At least my new clutch is in now, so big thanks to 'Stiff' and
'Tourettes' for helping us out yesterday - and now that the clutch
doesnt slip anymore, I can really appreciate the performance upgrade
done at DMC Ltd the other week :-) Wow, does Flopsy go now or
what!!!! :-D

We finally got back to Belper just before midnight.

I'm gonna post up some photos of my old coolant pipe in the Photos
section in a short while. I'm also gonna get new hoses!

Cheers,

Claire
