I cant see how an intermittent failure like this is due to any major
fault. 

Try the cheap simple things before you spend heaps of money. (The same
thing happened to me at Basildon, I've driven many miles since with no
problems)

Normally if a clutch master or slave cylinder goes wrong, its either
leaking fluid, of fails to work completely.  My guess is you had been
using the car a lot that day and the fluid got hot, possibly boiled,
causing an air lock. This is most likely if the fluid has not been
changed for a long time. Brake and clutch fluid adsorbs water over time
and water can boil in extreme conditions. 
My recommendation would be to change the fluid, drive the car long and
hard and see if it fails again. If so, I'd go for the clutch master
cylinder then.
 (I am assuming that the mechanical side of things are sound, clutch
fork, thrust bearing/ plate etc. But if one of these failed, then it is
very unlikely to start working again on its own).

I once drove home 50 miles with no clutch (release) in an old Ford
Serea.

 You switch the car off when approaching some where you cannot avoid
stopping, the brakes will still overcome the momentum (but if leave big
gaps between you and the car in front and these can be reduced
considerably) Start the car up in  1st gear ( a bit lumpy but better
than the alternative) then when under way try and manage in one gear,
but if you want to change gear, get your engine revs right and it will
slip straight in. It takes practice (practice on someone else's car) or
join the AA!

hi

is the system all original, lsave, master and pipe?.

my original master had stuck down, (but if this happened would 
disengage the clutch)

has is had any trouble getting gears? ie has the original line been 
ballooning?.

i would probably replace or rebuild the master to start as a rebuild 
kit is only a few quid (and easy to get to).

my slave had also gone, i fitted a rebuild kit but new ones are 
cheap.
just a pig to to.

i did mine from under the car hugging the gearbox, difficult but not 
impossible.

easiest would be to remove the intake manifold, but a lot of work to 
do that.
worth doing though if you need to do the valley, waterpump etc.
