Re: [doc] Fuel gauge accuracy............

Hey Nick
  What Saab was it out of? I broke the little connections on my fuel gauge a few months ago and I havent got round to replacing it yet. It has been added to a long list.

  Thanks

  Fuel gauges are innaccurate anyway and due to shape of tank are only an indication.

  Accurate way of calculating the miles per gallon:

  Fill car up with fuel (until filler auto stops)
  Note car mileage (M1)

  Run car until nearly empty (to get a large sample data)

    Fill car up with fuel (until filler auto stops)
  Note car mileage (M2)
  Note amount of fuel used L1 (in litres)

  gallons=litres/4.54

  G=L1/4.54

  mpg=(M2-M1) / G

  or

  mpg=(4.54*(M2-M1)) / L1

  My orig sender unit was from a saab. It fitted but resistance was opposite way. My low level light didn't work either. Fitted with new sliding scale type and wired correctly.

  If my memory serves me right, my new gauge was 0 ohms full and 100 ohms empty (could be the opposite).

    Enjoy

Does anyone know where you can get a working fuel tank sender from
then?
Mine never reads over 3/4 even when full - and takes about 20 miles
to get to that level, then when I'm at about 1/3 of a tank depending
if I'm on the straight or going up/down a hill depends where the
gauge reads.
Plus my fuel light doesnt work :-( so I've got no warning if I am
about to run out.
I just keep topping it up so at least I know there's fuel in it.
Ah, the joys of classic car ownership! :-)
