[doc] Re: fitting a cd player in the d

I upgraded mine recently to a DAB unit.
You can get the old Craig unit out without removing the console, but
you may end up with sore fingers :-)) - you can 'just' get at the nut
on the back of the craig from under the drivers side footwell but it's
a tight squeeze, loosen it enough then ease it round with a finger
(you can't get 2 fingers in to grip the nut.) I put a wing nut on the
new head unit fixing as its a lot easier to fit with the one-finger space!

The craig comes out through the top air vents above the radio(just)
after removing them and the 2 rubber boots inside (fitting em back is
fiddly but a bit of silicone spray on the boots helps a lot).
The multiplug that the craig plugs into has standard size (the small
size) spade pins, so you can connect everything up to that bar the
front spkrs (explained in a minute) using a DIN lead that plugs into
your new head unit that has comes out as wires - fit the small size
female spade connectors to the leads and plug directly into the
original craig socket - no mods to the cars wiring is required!

Now, the front speakers - the D' spkrs have the common (-ve's) of the
front and rear spkrs connected together on the same side of the car -
ie, the front drives spkr -ve and the rear drivers side spkr -ve are
connected together, and ditto for passenger side, giving 3 wires for
each side of the car. This will not work on modern head units, you
have to have separate wires for each speaker. Easy to get round
without cutting any wires. Just connect the rear speaker +ve's and the
common -ve's to the original craig connections using the spade
terminals (these are then only used for the rear spkrs) - don't
connect the front speaker +ve wires though. Now, unplug the
connections actually on the front speakers under the dash and insulate
the ends and cable tie them out of the way, connect some new leads to
the front speakers and wire them up to the front speaker connections
on the new DIN lead using bullet or spade connectors.
You have to cut the radio facia to fit the DIN size head unit as
already mentioned by others.

If you go for a DAB unit I can give you the info for a diplexer unit
that will split the signal from your existing D' aerial into FM and
DAB leads so you don't need 2 aerials (works quite well).

I replaced my front speakers at the same time (the new leads came with
the speakers), on advice from the ICE shop I bought Boston FX3's at
£40.00, they are superb. I fitted some cheepo rear speakers -
Pyramids, and despite the slating they have had before, they sound
fine with the Bostons in the front, and at £24 a pair! they are a bargain.
