[doc] Re: Brand New Car Alarm (Invention)

Unfortunately there is very little actual info on the website about
this 'new invention' but what I read is rather worrying. The main
feature is that if your car is stolen you can dial a special phone
number and stop it dead and then get your car back.

Actually many fleet tracking systems have this feature built into
them already but it is usually not activated for safety reasons.

Say that your car is stolen, so you phone up and stop it then arrange
to go recover it. What you don't know is that at the time the thief
was driving round the M25 in the outside lane in rush hour at 70mph
(unlikely I know). Car suddenly slows down and stops in the outside
lane and causes a multiple car pile up and kills someone, and
destroys your car anyway.

The accident was in effect caused by the car owner and they could
therefore be held responsible, possibly charged with manslaughter.

The only way to perform remote stops like this in anything like a
safe manner is for a police officer with visual contact of the
vehicle to authorise it.

However I must admit his self destructing hard drives intrigue me a
little, I hope it's not using an explosive charge, as that would
upset people if you tried to take it on a plane!
