I had this happen to me and it turned out to be the breather line,
or vent line that is connected to the filler neck and then connected
to the tank had came disconnected at the tank itself. When I topped
it off, it gushed from the bottom of the car. Didn't notice it till
I was walking back after buying gas. Freaked out at first. But after
reaffixing a new hose clamp to the line, the problem had gone away.
Since the access panel was open I flushed the surrounding tank area
out to eliminate any old fuel from stagnating there.
Best of luck,
Joe OBrien
