Hellope All, (those who've watched "Spaced" will know who says it that way) Let's talk about brakes. Now, without causing a rush of red faced complaints, it has to be said that traditional Delroean brakes have all the imense stopping power of a fat man, wearing dress shoes, on an ice-rink. Ooch, I'll put up my fire proof email protector after that one. However, it's also fair to say that most 20 year old cars feature less than perfect brakes. Don't live with it though, there is a better way. Two weeks ago my brake calipers, brake lines and brake pedal travel were assessed and repaired by DMUK. I now have brand new (perfectly reconditioned) calipers, stainless braided brake lines and a perfectly adjust brake pedal travel. The difference is quite astounding. Finally the real weak point is not the brakes, but in fact the tires themselves. I need ot get some new rubber new rubber next year. On a dry road, all four wheels will hold fast, causing yummy tire burn and her general braking speed is massivly improved. There is now a mere 2 inches of brake travel, versus the 6 inches I had before. I feel a lot safer when I drive, and the difference before a corner really gives the car a sports car brakign response. The brakign doesn't bind in any direction, and brakes in a smooth straight line when pushed hard. It is one of the least expencive jobs I've had done, but it was very worth it. The calipers look shiny new and very yummy. Likewise the stainless steel braided hoses look great. When someone stoops down to look closer into those wheel arches, you'll wish you'd had this work done. Treat yourself, I did and I'm very happy indeed. The more time goes on, and the more work I get done; the more I realise that the Delorean always had huge potential to be an excellent sports car. 3 years more in production, and she would have been pretty damned competitive within her market. Since we are 20 years on, and the factory is no more, my recommendation is to do what John Z would have done, get the existing cars up to a subtle modern specification. DMUK can definitely do it, and the cars do deserve it. One of my own long long term projects is to have a car totally rebuilt and upgraded to a 2003/4 Delorean model (DMC-R400). This would involve chasis strengthening work, interior redesign including new dials and lighting, coloured clear laquer paintwork, modern wheels, modern italian design front air dams, 400 hp engine, drilled vented discs, gearbox transplant, a new suspension setup, professional in car audio, leather throughout in tastful Aston Martin shades of Grey, straight through exhaust, redesigned rear air dam, Martins new halo lights (ask him about them), clear side indicators, subtle chrome inserts into the front and rear bumpers and possibly replacing the existing black side strips too, all sitting on bigger fatter and stickier rubber. Give me 3 years and I'll make the above a reality. I really want a car to rival anything else out there, and the Delorean makes the perfect base car for that project. Ultimately I'd want the car to look like a handmade modern production super car, the shape just doesn't date, only the other parts listed above. Those that don't fancy the idea, just don't look. If this is done right, the result will be gobsmackingly beautiful. I really believe that we can build the car that the DMC-12 would have evolved into by now. Kind regards to all, looking forward to seeing any D owners on the Bath to Bournemouth run on the 21st of September. Stephen. PSO 69W.
