My solenoid is finished too. Twenty odd years and lots of cranking seems to kill them.

I¹ve tracked it back to I think the solenoid.  I took it apart, cleaned it
and refitted it back into the car and it fired up.  Tried it a few times and
it started up again.  Tried again and it now the same.  Looks like a new
solenoid or starter needed.
