Re: [doc] frame removal

Hi Paul,

I guess I can claim to be somewhat of an expert on this one having done
it myself!

To remove the body from the chassis will entail disconnecting all the
electrics and the steering column and the various other leads and pipes
that you will find on route - it is not an easy job and you should
definatly think of this as a major project and put a good few days
aside for completing it. Careful how you lift the body - I recommend
lifting just an inch at each end and build up some supports to carry
the weight - it's amazing how many extra bits you will keep finding
attached. Don't misjudge the weight either: this is a 4 man job to lift
the shell clear!

As far as stripping the chassis is concerned it can take as long as you
like - the way I would recommend the dismantling is to take photographs
of every bit before you remove it. I guarantee that you wont remember
how it goes back no matter how obvious it seems at the time -
particularly the original routes of pipes and some of the unseen clips
etc. I have loads of these photos and can lend them to you.
Additionally the website that Robin Coombes put together of my rebuild
is very clear and will help you loads.

Be careful with the galvanizing - as a hot metal process it almost
certainly will distort some of the frame - you need a really
experienced expert to control this heat, and even they wont guarantee
distortion free results. I would also recommend putting hardened bolts
into all threads as any exposed threads will clog up and you will have
to rethread them afterwards. The bolts you put in are best greased and
will have to be cracked clear of the new metal coating to free them, so
don't do them right up.

I don't want to put you off as the final results are well worthwhile,
but I'm 18 months on from when I started and still have more to do!

Please call me if I can help you in any way.

KInd regards,

Andy Snell
