Was wondering if anyone has come up with any good
one-liners for people who ask the usual questions.
What happens when you get it up to 88?  Where's the
flux capacitor?  Where do you find plutonium?

I usually tell people I get pulled over by the cops
when I get up to 88.

This just proves the point I've been over-making recently: are too
many cars running around with factory original (translated: 21 year
old) hoses in cooling system. I know I sound like a broken record, but
this is too serious an issue to neglect. You don't want to overheat an
aluminum engine. Replacing the big formed hoses IS important, but it
is only part of the story. Every drop of coolant that passes through
them will eventually make its way through heater core lines and the
lines hidden under intake manifold as well.

Am waiting to see if a rash of broken hoses arises similar to TAB and
lower control arm failures.

Re: difficult to reach clamp -- next time just cut it off with a pair
of aviation snips. Use a utility knife to make V shaped notch in hose
for blades to fit under band.

I recently put a set of Michelin Pilots on the front and rear of my car. I love them. Very smoothe ride. The difference in steering ease was phenominal, but admittedly the Yokohama's I replaced were quite worn. Most of my driving is in town with occasional highway trips. No high speed stuff.

By the way, I agree with the "Deloreans are meant to be driven" philosophy. I've been driving mine daily now for a year and a half with no major problems. I've replaced one cooling hose, recharged the AC, adjusted the doors (no charge thanks to Dave Swingle - thanks again Dave!) and replaced the tires. My opinion is once a Delorean is in shape it doesn't require any more work or $$ to keep it running than any other 22 year old car. The second best part of owning a Delorean is after a year and a half, it's still worth at least what I paid for it, maybe more! The best part of owning one is, of course, is driving it.

Already beat you too it.

1. Bypass hose on water pump split last year. Caught me off guard, as
was the only time I had a coolant failure, and the idiot light for
the alternator did NOT turn on.

2. Small leak behind water pump, proven by a small pool of coolant on
engine block. Exact source of leak is undeterminable, however,I'd put
my money on the hose connecting the pump, to the Y-pipe.

3. Hose connecting to heater core inside of the heating & A/C box has
sprung a tiny leak. Coolant loss is VERY minimal, needing only to be
topped off every few months. However, a nasty film of glycol is
condensing on the edges of my windscreen.

All of the above leaks are on 20 year old hoses. Every other
connecting hose in the entire system has been replaced. Although I'm
still scratching my head as to why the ones on the water pump were
left untouched. In addition, my car is a daily driver, and is
operated in the extreme heat of Las Vegas durring my commute, and
various travels. So my system REALLY gets a work out, and as a
result, the lifespan of the 20 year old rubber has been shortened.

So yes, I'd advise to be prepaired to start seeing this as an
increasing trend over the next couple of years. Even if this doesn't
turn out to be a trend with cars experiencing mass failures of their
cooling systems on the road, it still is going to happen one day,
unless thoses hoses are replaced.

I agree.

I have owned #5508 since April 1, 1966.  Since then, I have logged over
90,000 miles and most of it is in New York City area and the radius of 100
miles
surrounding the city.  I used my car daily and at times I have driven my car
on
long trips that can be 1,000 miles per run (one way) and only to stop for
fuel
and restroom stops.  Many of these trips have been in good weather as well
as
in the rain, snow, extreme hot sunny days and etc.  I have driven my
DeLorean
as I would as with any contemporary modern car and it can handle it.

So, on this point, what is the value of my car for me?  For me, as long as
it
support me as a vehicle as it was design to do -- To be road worthy at all
times and to be trouble free -- TO BE ON THE ROAD RUNNING!

Yes, I do get the normal wear and tear that all vehicles are subjected to,
but I do have my car properly serviced when the time is due, which includes
replacing or rebuilding parts when necessary.  Remember, proper maintenance
is a
MUST and yes, a "X" amount of money must be allocated for the maintenance as
well as for the up keeping -- just to keep it in tip top running condition.
This "X" amount is not necessarily as much to be spent and the stress that
you
will encounter when you are stuck on the road, or when you discover all the
problems that will surface after long periods of non-usage.

As long as the electrical and some of the other "quirks" taken care of and
the updated are performed, I believe the DeLorean is NOT a troublesome car
as
many owners complains it to be.

Bottom line???  If you have the time and money, do enjoy driving your car
when you can.  For, if not now .... When???

Money is NOT everything!!!  The DeLorean was built to
be driven.  Frankly, the more you drive it the more
you learn to like it.  And, the more you drive it, the
fewer and fewer glitches will come up.

To live the dream you must drive the dream.

My stock response to this question is "The car sold for $25,000 new in
1981".  They usually say "huh!", and wander away.  The more persistent
ones come back with "How much is it worth now?".  My reply to that is

That usually satisfies them.  Hope that helps.

Subject: Re: Overheating

Every hose on the car is equally important including the ones you
can't see on top of the engine. All of the hoses are under 15 psi and
operate at over 200 degrees. You should not expect them to last 20 +
years, this goes for the belts too. If you have a coolant leak
ANYWHERE you are going to have a problem. Even a seemingly small leak
will eventually allow air into the system causing the water pump to
stop circulating or reducing the capacity of the radiator. I urge
everyone on the DML to replace ALL of the coolant hoses and seals if
they are origional or if you just don't know. The PRV-6 is a rugged
little engine but it can't take overheating. For a bulletproof cooling
system I recommend the following
Replace ALL hoses and seals (including the heater hoses front AND rear)
Replace the idler bearings
Replace the "vee" belts
Switch to a metal header bottle
Replace the otterstadt switch and seal and convert to the higher vin
configuration if an early car
Upgrade the 2 circuit breakers by fuse block
Go with a Fanzilla
Use a 50/50 mix of soft water and premium anti-freeze that says safe
for aluminum and change it every 2 years
Pressurize the system for 15 min to 15 psi and bleed for air while
testing for leaks
Test the pressure cap
Install an overflow recovery bottle on the hose under the pressure cap.
Replace the origional radiater that has the plastic tanks on it with a
triple row brass radiator.
Make sure both fans run and are blowing from front to rear and the
fans are not loose on the motor shafts
Make sure there is no crud blocking the air flow through the radiator
Do not block or obstruct the tiny grills in front of the radiator
(like with a license plate)
If you do all of these things you will have a very reliable cooling
system on the Delorean. IMHO the two weakest areas of the car are the
cooling system and the electrical system. These improvements will take
out the majority of the problems. It will be expensive but so is
towing and doing the repairs anyway and the possability of doing
expensive damage to the motor.

I wasn't worried about crank nut -- just wondered what you used to
remove pulley after nut off.

Like most engines, PRV pistons do indeed hit twice in each combustion
cycle. Is about only thing it has in common...

When I said pulley has two timing marks, was talking only about
reindexing TDC. Of course distributor can only fire near top (10
degrees -- sorry, couldn't resist) of compression stroke. Was under
impression you watched valves before marking rotor location. That's
why I wondered if valve covers were still off engine.

Two-key cars use two different blanks and cuts.
A door-key code start with WR and is between 5,000 and 5,999.
These door locks use an ilco blank number X169.
The ignition/later door locks use an ilco blank X29.

Bill, your ignition probably was replaced. Do the door keys operate the box
behind the driver's seat?

Hmm. Two interesting thoughts struck me.
1) Do the REAL two-key car's driver's box lock get opened by the door key
(X169, WR#) or by the ignition (X29, 7xxxX)?
2) Do UK/right side drive cars have the battery behind the driver (same
hole) or did they switch the holes around?

Did two key cars use same blank for each? Don't know if mine is proper
two key or if ignition cylinder was replaced with compatible grooves but:

With different keys now for ignition and doors (actually just one
double cut key), I only have one X code under driver headliner.

Actually the GTO debuted in 1964.

(Hopefully people won't hold me accountable for MY many typo's...)

Re: general public comments -- one of the reasons people worry mess
out of us about our cars is because they are actually artfully
designed. Compare to unimaginative cookie cutter look alike soap
bubble cars rolling out of any factory today, and the attraction is
obvious. Like moths to a flame. Did the public give up on design, or
did the designers give up on the public?

Aluminum heads are generally considered disposable on cast iron blocks...

You'd probably have better success with a replacement. See Message
#31008, then contact Martin Gutkowski direct. He's become rather
expert of late retrofitting Volvo components on PRV. B28F is standard
in early 80's 260 series, and mid 80's 760 series.

Could you please fill me in on the "New Goodyear" tires...I have not heard
that they make a matched set for the Delorean. I have the original NCT's on
my car but the car has set along time and when I had the front's balanced I
was told they were out of round. If Goodyear now makes a matched set...then
I could perhaps change the fronts now and reduce the vibration and then
replace the rears latter on.

I had the Yoko's on my car when I bought it, and HATED them. The tread life
was absolutely unacceptable, I don't like the way they look on the car, and
they were scary in the rain. I don't think they're still available anymore
either... they were discontinued within the last year or so. I replaced my
tires with Michelin Pilot XGT's... and I couldn't be happier with them. I
believe their traction is every bit as good, if not better than the Yoko's
(though I think the new Goodyears look the best), the ride MUCH better, and
they also look really good on the car. Their tread wear has proven much
better too. Quite a few owners are now putting these on their cars, so I'm
not the lone nutty one... LOL. Congrats on the new DeLo too by the way!
