Subject: [DML] Re: Angle Drive options & performance
I'm afraid this is one area where no amount of pontificating or prevaricating
will do any good -- angle drive failure is probably the most common DeLorean
ownership experience. DeLoreans chew up angle drives at a vastly greater rate
than any other speedometer drive mechanism, a disparity that is magnified even
further by the limited amount of use most DeLoreans receive.
Have you ever autopsied a dead angle drive? I've done two, and the failures I
found were identical on each:
- Output gear was worn in the center of each tooth, clearly visible with a
straight edge (only the center makes contact -- not the outer edges)
- Axle gear bushing was worn on the vertical axis, which eventually allowed the
gear to drop away from the output gear
The combined effect was lack of gear meshing, hence failure.
No amount of arm waving and foot stamping is going to change the fact that angle
drives are highly susceptible to failure, as nearly every DeLorean owner can
testify.
