I wouldn't do it this way since single-DIN consoles are available. The
edges will also be folded-over, doubling the thickness of the metal around
the new stereo so that the console won't flex and the stereo won't hang down
(point upwards slightly) from its own weight. Besides, you need to pull
the whole console anyway to cut it, so you might as well just replace it with
an improved part.
Personally, I just hate hacking up OEM parts.

You need to be careful while doing this as it leaves the edges pretty
thin. Masking tape will help to ensure that you do not harm the black finish
too.
Then I used a Delorean wiring diagram to connect the new radio's harness
to the stock wiring.
This will allow a really clean installation and choice of many radios.
