OK, I got an update, more information to come.
Degussa in Schwäbisch Gmünd did the plating.
The parts had to be covered at least with 4um gold, in some areas
they had twice that amount.
Altogether they needed 800 gramms gold per car, at 30 Euros
per gramm it's 25000? just the Material.
With the work and tools that need to be done 50000Euros are feasible
and also what Degussa told a friend over here when he asked them
what it would cost to plate a car today.
50000 Euro = 64000$ today
far away from a million?.

He seems to think that if you were to attempt plating a car like that today (with current gold prices) it would be close to a million. I'd like to settle the debate by knowing how much actual gold was used, and what that would amount to in today's dollars.
