Haven't had this happen in my D but I've had the same thing in other vehicles over the years. In each of those cases, the throwout bearing was on it's way south. Sometimes gives an audible whine but only does it (early on) when starting from a stop. Later, it does it every time the clutch is depressed and ultimately will whir/whine all the time.
It's a pretty inexpensive fix (though a pain in the butt to get to), but if you have to do it, might as well change out the pressure plate and clutch disk while you have it apart. It'll go on you at some point; why take it apart twice.
Best of luck.
