My original idea was to buy a $8-9k car and do work on it over time. I decided instead to go for $15K and got a MUCH better car, and in the long run spent much less in total to fix it up.
Those prices were in 2001, so they are prob more like a 10-12k car now vs a 20K car
Spend the little more up front, and you will be much better off!

Ah yes, this sounds like me about 5 years ago. A heed of warning, but in a good way. If you get a car to learn on, be prepared to run into PO problems.
