This is pure speculation on my part but I would doubt they would have gone through that much trouble. Usually when they need things to move they use people to push or pull it from off-frame including the cameras and the sound equipment. Much more versitile and less complicated. They can vary the set-up, speed, etc. No complicated systems to break or go dead in the middle of a shot. Besides, if it was true I am sure we would have heard more about this by now.

I think one car was sacrificed in order to be connected to a hydraulic boom for hovering shots, and eventually ended up on the sound stage for the tour, but I never heard that rumor. But more to the point, why would someone drive a car on a sound stage? The whole point is supposed to keep everything as stationary as possible. Even if you did need sound effects, that's what Foley artists are for.

Not that a situation like this could ever be impossible, but after reading the story of the Black Beauty, and seeing how other studios deal with originals and replica cars from movies, I do seriously doubt anyone has their car on loan. Sounds more like confusion of facts where someone ends up telling me DeLoreans had helicopter engines, and were built in Utah again...
