Farrar,
Glass is far more scratch resistant than any rigid, clear plastic. You know a windshield is two pieces of glass with plastic sandwiched in between, it gives the non shattering properties.
Why not two thin sheets of glass with a polymer in between? Too expensive, glass is cheap.

I have often wondered why windshields are still made from glass. Why not
make the windshield out of thicker transparent vinyl? Or for better
scratch resistance, you could use a polycarbonate material. As long as
it can be pushed out from the inside in the event of an accident, I
can't see why it would be a bigger problem than glass.
I hope someone can answer this question. I have no engineering
experience, just a load of questions. :)
