I think your compression is fine - the valve adjustment accuracy
could cause that much variation. You describe a classic exhaust leak
sound - often it sounds like a valve click.
The exhaust leaks really need fixed to get an accurate CO adjustment.
Once the CO is correct a hesitation is usually fuel related -i.e.
fuel pressure regulator related or a sticky throttle plate, the idle
speed regulator is not turning off, vacuum leaks, etc.
