You think CO2 is not poisonous? Although it is inert it displaces
Oxygen and binds more readily to Hemoglobin than Oxygen reducing the
body's ability to oxygenate. Prolonged exposure and/or high
concentrations will cause death. The main function of a catalytic
converter in automobiles is to reduce hydrocarbons. It turns them into
CO and CO2. Since both are colorless and odorless they are
undetectable, especially if you are sleeping. If you are lucky enough
to wake up before dying you will have the worst headache of your life.
THAT is why you need a CO detector in each sleeping area of a house.
Cars are not the only potential source of CO and CO2. Any appliance
like ovens, water heaters, stoves, and furnaces also create CO and
CO2. A bad chimney or flue can allow CO and CO2 to enter the living
spaces. Leaking heat exchangers on a hot-air heating system can also
be deadly. Get combination smoke and CO detectors and put one on each
level of the house and in each room where you sleep. They should all
be interconnected with battery back-up.
