It's quite obvious what happened,he installed a high output ignition
system, coupled to a basically stock factory distributor, trying to
pump out a massive electrical charge to a quite oversize plug
gap.....times six cylinders, that is fine for a short period, but like
the HEI ignition systems (High Energy Ignition)used in GM cars in the
1970's and early 1980's THEY quickly broke down the contacts in the
system...but with the HEI system everything was MATCHED to work with
one and the other,so it was just a matter of Cleaning the
contacts...But in this case since the "weak link" was the Distributor
and in particular the factory Pickup coil(inside the Distributor),and
Ignition Module(or just
old/weak)...they simply were not up to the task for ultra high output
with such a big demand(for the oversize plug gaps)which in turn lead
the Capacitor to die,now you have this surge of current, that builds
up between firings, that has nowhere to go but through the Distributor
Module/pickup coil...which it cannot handle anymore, the result is
MAJOR internal heat up/melting/fire inside the distributor, from the
melting plastics.
Something similar to someone at home trying to run a high output amp
to a low power stereo with high performance wires into stock stereo
speakers..something is gonna overheat/melt/BURN!!!!
