A couple of dabs of silicone won't hurt and will hold the gasket in
position as you assemble. Since the gasket is used I would put some on
a finger and just lightly smear a very thin coating on both surfaces
before inserting the gasket. Tighten the bolts evenly and not very
tightly. Be very careful with that gasket, if you bend it it will
crack because it is so old and dryed out.

surfaces really well of old material and don't scrape on it since it
is aluminum. You could also use some permatex gasket spray, it is red
and looks like paint but it is tacky. It helps seal any tiny pores
there may be.
