Although it is better on the struts with the doors open. You must keep in mind the environment the D will be stored in. You would want the D stored in a climate controlled environment that would not allow any animals, moisture, dust and whatnots getting into the car. I have the same set of struts on my car for the past 4 or 5 yrs and store it with the doors closed and haven't had any problems.

This will reduce the torque load on the torsion bars.
This will reduce the pressure in the struts (less leakage over time).
