Hey Steve,
when you look at the schematic you can see, that it is only
for protection against negative voltage / spikes.
I have seen many that were burned. Two reasons for that:
somebody was too stupid to install the battery correctly
or
it is a Zener-Diode and protects it against over voltage.
Well - then it would protect the whole car against that,
but the size of the diode doesn't allow it to be a real
safety device...
To make it short - even if you leave it out you won't
sense a difference. It ha snothing to do with the regular
function of the module ! Use a 1N4002 or similar if you want to
replace it, but don't spend too much time on it.
A good idea is to replace the relays, and/or do my modification
as described on the DMCNEWS and - to really protect it from
burning the solenoids - install a circuit breaker (7...10Amps)
in the thick red wire. But one that needs to be reset manually !!!
(costs around $5)
Elvis & 6548 - 30kmiles/6 years on the same door lock module
without any problems ! Of course with remote door lock and opener...

1N9119, !N2071, or

would be ion order, given
