"Relatively well" is not my idea of being sure.
Most fuel gauges are (way) off, as is mine. Even the new(er) ones 
from Houston are not accurate.
Better know you can drive on and have a spare can filled with you 
just in case, than getting stuck on the side of the road and nobody 
stops!
You don't have to be in a desert to feel helpless or lost. That can 
happen in crowded areas and on highways in small countries too.
