The answers to your questions are yes and no respectively. The plastic
guides appeared in the 1982 and later cars. It is probably best to stay with
the plastic guides.

I bought some metal door guides to replace the plastic ones on my 1983
Delorean. It appears that the holes are different for the two guides.
Did the factory change the placement of the holes between the metal and
plastic door guides? Did they make metal door guides with the same
configuration as the plastic ones?
