You can't really compare public transportation in the US to Europe or anywhere else. Our public transportation systems stink and are poorly connected, overpriced, inconvienient, etc
Thanks to oil companies, and our desire to "individually express ouselves", most of the mass transit was done away with in the 1950s and decades that followed.
But hey... What do you expect from a country founded on revolution. ;)

Like turbines, rotary engines were an interesting idea that just
didn't bear fruit in consumer automobiles. Not only are they less fuel
efficient than traditional four stroke designs, but they produce more
pollution and tend to burn oil prodigiously...
