[DML] Gear Teeth Question

I'm no physics major, so here's a question for those who are:
If you have two gears with teeth that intermesh at an angle, like a
letter V, is it easier to rotate towards the point at the bottom or
away towards the ends?
I've been playing with my angle drive, and it sure seems easier to
turn backwards than forwards. It's as if there's a binding force in
one direction and a loosening force in the other.
The gears in Smith angle drives angle towards the speedometer output.
Our primary direction of wheel rotation turns the angles towards each
other. If the unit were mounted on the right wheel, primary wheel
rotation would turn the angles away from each other.
