I've been waiting for the "experts" to comment on this, but no one has taken the bait so guess I will.  In 18 years of DeLorean ownership and selling parts not once did I ever encounter plastic angle drive gears.  I also checked with PNDC founder Arnie Brandon who has rebuilt more of them than anyone else I know, and he also said they all have metal gears.  The problems with them include lack of lubrication, binding of cables, and overall poor design, but not plastic gears.
