At the risk of jinxing my own angle-drive, I can report that I do have my original drive unit (plastic gears) and it works fine. If that were not enough, I have a rotary inline pulse generator for my GPS between the lambda unit and the speedometer that was spliced into the cable nearly five years ago. Everything still works great. The only modification I have made is that I removed the original cable guide clamp from the wheel hub and replaced it with a spring-loaded home-made version mounted to the inside wheel well. (I feel it provides a better path of movement for the speedo cable.) In addition, I think I have lubricated the drive twice in six years as a maintenance "to do" and I have lubed it maybe two other times during brake & tire chanhges. Other than that, I have no idea why mine has lasted so long.

Subject: [DML] Re: WANTED: Angle Drive
Someone explain how some cars still are running with the origional
angle drive with the plastic gears and others (a small number
presumably) go through 4 angle drives with metal gears. There has to
be something wrong with the cars that can chew up the metal gears. It
would be interesting to pull the speedometer heads on those cars and
possibly find parts jamming the works. Either that or some other
problem like a cable that is too long, a missing lower support, etc.
Bulletproofing the angle drive is only covering up the basic problem
IMHO. An interesting point, on the cars that destroy the origional
plastic gears the same cars are also capable of destroying the metal
gears. Why is that when other cars can live with the plastic gears?
