A solid pipe will not allow you to remove the pump, no "give". The OEM
system is a bit of a "kludge" but with good parts properly installed
it works. Another reason for the hose is to prevent the vibrations
from the pump being transferred to the bottom of the tank making it a
"sounding board". The pump is mounted in rubber so it can shake and
vibrate. Properly installed you can hardly hear it buzz. As for the
aluminum tuna can, even that can corrode if it sits in water on the
bottom of the tank. When you start to get inventive you have to
consider all possabilites. BTW when you work inside the fuel tank you
SHOULD have a fire extingusher handy.
