Hi John, 

I had this happen to me a few years back after a car show and it took me ages to get rid of the marks. I tried all sorts of cleaners (including mineral spirits etc) but in the end I decided to go back to basics and just wash the car again. Here's the technique I use and it's served me well for quite a while now. You will need to raid a few items from your bathroom at home:
 
- Mix up some hot water with a few drops of liquid hand soap (the stuff you find in your bathroom) and grab a good soft towel.

- Using a sponge, wash your car one panel at a time. Scrub firmly with the grain but obviously be VERY gentle on your hood.

- When you've washed the panel, grab the towel and dry the panel using plenty of elbow grease and fast strokes. Again, be very gentle on the hood. With the right technique, you'll find your water stains disappear and the panel has a really crisp, clean finish all over. You can also clean the fascias and exterior plastic trim with this technique.

I was washing my D one warm but cloudy New England afternoon and had 
just finished scrubbing the hood with a combination of lukewarm water 
and Dawn liquid when I received an urgent call. Without rinsing the 
hood, I rushed to take the call. Unfortunately, the sun came out while 
I was on the call and now I have water marks on the hood that will not 
go away. 

I've tried Windex and stainless steel cleaner and they make the hood 
look shiny for a day or so but then the water marks return, more 
prominent than ever. 

Any thoughts on how to get rid of them for good? Thanks!
