You could probaby do it for $50,000,000.00 on the cheap. Adding
airbags means crash testing, which means recertificaiton. Toyota doesn't
give their engines away to just anybody - ask Lotus. You would probably
have to rebadge the engine, which means recertification. It would pass,
but the testing would still need to be done. Pick a price point - say
$80k per car. That puts you in upper Boxster S, lower 911 territory,
so you would need around 1.0 - 1.2 g on a skid pad, with 0-60 in
around 5 seconds. Braking would need to be stellar. Now you are talking
about something other than a backbone frame, as it is just too flexible
to handle that kind of performance. Toss out the underbody along
with the frame. That means all new tooling, which guarantees that
the car will need to be recertified.
With an extremely generous profit margin of $20k per car, you
need to sell 2500 cars to make back your investment. The target
is moving, so the performance targets I gave above will probably
be barely adequate in the 4 years it takes to get all of the design,
tooling, development, hiring, training, pilot production and testing done.
There is a reason nobody has tried it.
