I think you are referring to the manual transmission. It gets filled
and level checked from a plug on the side. The automatic has a
dipstick which is also used to fill it from. With the right adapter
and a long breaker bar the plug will come out unless it is all munched
up because someone tried to use a vise grip or pipe wrench! You are
correct though in that the level checking/fill plug should always be
removed before draining the manual transmission. Same deal for the
final drive on the automatic.
