Jake,
YOU would be surprised how much the strut HOLDS up the door, remove
the strut, and you will see that the door will almost close using just
the torsion bar to hold it open!! The torsion bars main job is to USE
it's applied torque in the closed position to SWING open the door and
stabilize the doors in the open position, once in the open position it
is up to the strut to do the main holding of the doors.. then all
the torsion bar does is HELP the strut to keep the door
open...it's main job again is to swing open the door and only help
the strut, the STRUT is the main support to keep the door open,(the
torsion bar uses maybe 15 percent of it's Torque force to help keep
the door open)the rest is done by the strut,Yes the torsion bars are
under a LIGHT LOAD in the open position, that is why people bump their
heads on the doors when the struts are going bad, since the Torsion
bars CANNOT by themselves support a fully open gull-wing door, and at
the same time the strut needs the extra support to keep the door
fully open and stabilized. They work hand in hand with each other.
Hope that clarifies it for you,and helps you understand how the doors
work..
