Answer to both the clever mechanical wastegate control -and- the legend
engine itself:
Because it's long since been superceeded by EFI and electronic boost
control systems. 1984 Renault released the Z7U turbo engine which uses
the same block and heads. I have three. Aftermarket boost controllers
are ten-a-penny and most decent aftermarket ECUs support active boost
control anyway.
:-)
#2727 has an pair of Island manifolds hooked up to a Z7U, aftermarket
ECU and the turbos are Mazda 323 type IHI RHB52's. It's hitting the ECUs
boost safety cut at 3500rpm through a crappy intercooler which will be
changed out shortly :-)
