According to the webpage (http://eliseusa.com/rotary.htm) the
transmission is a 6-speed w/LSD from a 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.
Pretty specific if you ask me. :)
As far as how it was installed in the car, I seem to remember Jim saying
that there was some modification to the frame (notching? a piece cut
out?) to make the transmission fit properly. I believe he had the
section that was cut reinforced in another way to make up for the
weakness the modification introduced. This was at least 3 years ago,
and I'm working from memory here, but it was something like that.
I'll have to go back in my archives and see if I can find the messages
and pictures to reference specifically.
I remember being particularly impressed with Jim's ingenuity and
devotion to the project. It was indeed a masterpiece that made us all
jealous.
When I heard he was trying to sell it in 2004, his asking price was
$25,000. I remember hearing that he sold it on eBay for somewhere south
of $20,000. A steal by any measure.
Regards,
Jon Heese
