If this is a recent development, then your suggestion that the local AM stations are strong enough to overcome the interference during the day is probably on target. I'm pretty sure from what else you wrote that it is an antenna grounding problem. Please also check the antenna cable itself, making sure that it has no breaks in the sheilding, etc.
Also note, though, that aftermarket tuners typically have much WORSE AM reception than OEM radios. The aftermarket priorities are typicaly the CD or FM or Satellite reception and AM usually is sacrificed in the process. So, chances are, your Eclipse head unit probably isn't all that sensitive in the AM band. That, coupled with the tricky grounds in the DeLorean, are probably both contributing to the problem and the odd changes throughout the day.
