Dave,
It sounds like the engine overheated. This may mean that the radiator
cooling fans are not operating properly.
This may have damaged then engine, or not.
The only way to find out, is to check to make sure the oil level is
okay. Then put the car on an incline with the rear wheels 4 inches
higher than the front wheels. Then refill the cooling system, but
leave the cap off.
Start the engine and see what happens. You should see some coolant
movement in the bottle. It should start to warm up. If the engine
runs okay, then you are probably lucky.
If you see coolant leaking from hoses or onto the ground, you have a
leaky hose or some other problem.
Make sure to run the engine for only a few minutes at first. You have
to bleed the air out of the cooling system.
The various vendors make a kit to add on to vent the air, you should
install one.
Let the engine cool off.
Then, Do this a few times. IF all seems okay, let it run longer and
watch the temp gauge, if the fans don't go on by 180, you have a sensor
or electrical feed problem.
Good luck on getting your D restored.
Bob
