There is a pair of metal bars that runs through the visors that are fastened
to the body with one screw in each end. The wood you are referring to is
actually a expanded foam part that the steel rods go into. Recovering these
can be tricky because of the varying shape and the two holes that need to be
left open for the steel rods. I don't recommend recovering yourself and to
use only an experienced professional. I had to go to two different shops
because the first did such a lousy job of recovering them. The trick is
hiding the seam after you pull the cover over the foam part. Also, the foam
parts have a concave shape to them and there is a piece of double sided tape
in the hollow side to pull the cover in.
My advice is to see if Houston or Grady have new ones and buy those.

I too need to recover my sun visors. The wood for the driver's side
is broken so that needs to be replaced. I never taken one off and
haven't looked closely to see what holds one in. How does one take
one out? And how does one repair the visor?
