That's where it gerts interesting, because the DeLorean's engine and 
transmission is basically that of an Alpine A310. Here're the facts:

1) A transaxle already proven in rear-mounting (alternatives other than 
Porsche??)
2) The crank case used on the DeLorean is only common to the Renault 30 
and A310
3) The 369 transmission used on the DeLorean is also only common to the 
above two cars (identical to the UN1 in all but linkage arrangement)
4) An engine already certified for US emissions (Volvo B28F spec) and 
available immediately in large quanitites.
5) DMC had several A310 test mules, and there are a couple still 
floating about with DeLorean prototype engines

So if you ask me, it was the obvious choice - strength didn't enter into 
the decision, they just lifted the whole drivetrain from the A310, then 
swapped the block for a B28F, keeping all the Renault ancillaries. It's 
all just a happy accident that Renault did a very good job with the 
UN1/369 - proven by its popularity for years in the kit car market.

IMO if you manage to break a DeLorean's stock transmission with a PRV 
engine, you've built an engine that's well into the danger zone in a 
DeLorean anyway. Without a serious re-think on the brakes, wheels and 
tyres anyway. That 300hp GTA is one of the fastest accellerating cars 
I've ever been in - and that includes a 400hp race-bred Nissan Skyline, 
and a 550hp Lamborghini Diablo (both of which I've been lucky enough to 
drive). I've driven Marc's Nissan-engined DeLorean and while it wasn't 
as fast as the GTA, it was certainly fast enough to be a handful! (ask 
Travis Graham.......:-) I'd like to see some dyno results for your car, 
Marc?
