Knut, from what I have been TOLD, you should be able to drive 100+ miles
without it. I had my alt's regulator go out on me on the way to California
(from AZ) and got stuck in Blythe around this time last year.
I called one of the big vendors and they told me to disconnect/cut the
little wire on the alt and drive the remaining 200+ miles there.
I ended up buying a cheap battery, ('cause mine was cooked), and completed
the drive with my highbeams, A/C, radio, dome lights and hazards flashsing
to keep the volts around the 13 mark.
Good luck.
