This is not the kind of adjustment you can do properly by trial and
error. You will damage the ring and pinion and possibly the bearings.
The clunk-clunk is a sign that it is too loose. You can just as easily
overtighten it. The only way to get it right is to do it as per the
procedure in the Workshop Manual. To do it you have to pull and
disassemble the transmission. Don't drive on it until you can have the
adjustment done correctly, you will damage some expensive parts.
