Last weekend I had the both shift boots off 4603 because I was doing work on the shift linkage. On either side of the shifter I noticed to large support rods running lengthwise in the direction of the frame. Now that you bring up the possible issue of frame flex, perhaps the support rods were installed in the DeLorean to prevent just that.
