I think Chris has the answer. I quick rev could easily blow an exhaust manifold gasket. That sounds like a lifter (you don't have lifters) and can be confusing. Run your hand around the manifold with it running. If you can hear the noise you can feel the leak. Caution-don't burn yourself.
